Love's complete game gives Newberry a Valentine's Day win
Sunday, February 14, 2010

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College's Chris Love picked up a complete game win, scattering six hits over nine innings to give Newberry a 7-1 win in the series finale against The College of Saint Rose on Valentine's Day at the Smith Road Complex.

Newberry moves to 5-3 overall and the Golden Knights fall to 1-3 as Newberry picked up the series win.

Love (2-0; Columbia, S.C.) struck out seven batters and walked only one. An RBI double from Ryan Burke (Troy, N.Y.) was Saint Rose's only extra base hit in the game and gave the Golden Knights their only run.

C.J. Tyrkala (Palm Harbor, Fla.) went 3-for-3 on the day as eight of Newberry's nine batters earned a hit.

Love also started Newberry's first offensive rally, as he reached on a throwing error to start the bottom of the second inning. Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) hit a single through the right side and Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to put the two runners in scoring position. Roland Haskins (Alexandria, Va.) walked to load the bases and a hard-hit single from Tyrkala plated the first run of the game. Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) hit an RBI single through the left side to give Newberry a 2-0 lead after the second inning.

Newberry put up five runs in the sixth inning to pull away, taking advantage of four St. Rose errors. A Horvath single led off the frame and Haskins was hit by a pitch. Tyrkala laid down a bunt in an attempt to sacrifice, but was able to reach second base after both the third baseman and first baseman committed throwing errors, plating Horvath and giving Newberry a 3-0 lead. Scaggs smashed a ball to second that the St. Rose second baseman was unable to handle to score Haskins. A Pierce Labrador (Lexington, S.C.) bunt single scored Tyrkala and a sacrifice bunt by Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) scored Scaggs. Love appeared to pop up to second to end the inning, but the St. Rose player dropped the ball, allowing Labrador to run home and give Newberry the 7-0 lead.

St. Rose cut the lead to 7-1 on Burke's RBI double with two outs, but Love struck out pinch hitter Nick Alexandrovich (Commack, N.Y.) to strand two runners in scoring position and escape with minimal damage. Love did not allow a walk until the next-to-last batter of the game and induced an easy groundout to win the game and move to 2-0 on the season.

The win also marked the 449th career victory for head coach Bob Rikeman. Newberry will look to give Rikeman his 450th win on Wednesday, when the scarlet and gray host Limestone for a single game. First pitch at the Smith Road Complex is set for 7 p.m. St. Rose's next game comes on Feb. 27, when the Golden Knights will play Mercyhurst (Pa.) in Boca Raton, Fla.
