Newberry splits frigid doubleheader with St. Rose
Saturday, February 13, 2010

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College baseball team worked furiously throughout the day to remove over four inches of snow from the field in order to play a chilly doubleheader at the Smith Road Complex on Saturday. The visiting Golden Knights from The College of Saint Rose won the first game, 12-7, while Newberry came away with the 10-4 win in the second game.

Newberry moves to 4-3 on the season, while St. Rose is now 1-2. The two teams will face off again in the series finale at noon Sunday.

Game One: St. Rose 12, Newberry 7
Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) and C.J. Tyrkala (Palm Harbor, Fla.) each hit two-run homeruns in the sixth inning, but nine consecutive runs from St. Rose was too much for the hosts to overcome in the first game.

Paul Partridge (Uniontown, Pa.) and Zachary Halloran (Albany, N.Y.) each recorded RBIs and Derek Marshall (Malone, N.Y.) scored on an error in the first inning to put Newberry in an early 3-0 hole.

Newberry's Pierce Labrador (Lexington, S.C.) led off the bottom of the inning with a double and was plated on an RBI single from Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) to cut the lead to 3-1. After Newberry starter Sean Holsonback (North Augusta, S.C.) escaped a jam in the top of the second, Horvath led off the bottom of the second with a triple off of the left field fence and scored on a Tyrkala sacrifice fly. John Fogarile (New York, N.Y.) singled and moved to second on a passed ball and tied the game on a Labrador RBI single.

St. Rose regained the lead in the top of the third on a first-and-third play with two outs, when Halloran scored before Tom Wiener (Montrose, N.Y.) was caught stealing. That run put the Golden Knights in the lead for good and was enough to tag Holsonback with his second loss of the season. St. Rose scored three runs on RBIs from Marshall, Partridge and Grant Smith (Waterford, Pa.) after the first three Golden Knights of the inning reached on walks. The Golden Knights scored five runs in the top of the fifth to make it a 12-3 game.

But the Newberry nine never gave up, staging an impressive rally on the bats of Horvath and Tyrkala. Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.) led off the frame with a walk and Horvath hit a blast to left field. The St. Rose left fielder could not find the ball in the fencing and Horvath continued to run around the basepaths to record an inside-the-park homerun. Pinch hitter Edmund Gravely (Rocky Mount, N.C.) was hit by a pitch to set up a monster homerun to left-center by Tyrkala. Newberry continued to rally, but left the bases loaded in the sixth and could not score in the seventh.

Daniel Cavazinni (Miller Place, N.Y.) picked up the win for the Golden Knights despite giving up the two homers. Starter David Batchelder (Troy, N.Y.) picked up no decision, allowing three runs on five hits in four innings. Marshall, Partridge, Halloran and Wiener all went 2-for-4 for St. Rose, with Partridge earning three RBIs and Marshall driving in two.

For Newberry, Holsonback falls to 0-2 after allowing four runs - three earned - on six hits in three innings. Horvath was 3-for-4 and also reached on an error, falling just a double short of the cycle. Tyrkala earned three RBIs, while Labrador and Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) went 2-for-4.

Game Two: Newberry 10, St. Rose 4
Newberry starter Chris Roman (Kissimmee, Fla.) struck out 10 batters in four innings of work to pick up his first win of the season in the nightcap.

Roman escaped a bases loaded jam in the second inning with two straight strikeouts before Newberry put up two runs in the bottom of the second. Roland Haskins (Alexandria, Va.) and Alex Heller (Rockledge, Fla.) hit singles and later scored to put up the 2-0 lead.

Jim Pollack (Homer, Alaska) and Horvath led off the bottom of the third with singles and later scored to push the lead to 4-0. The Golden Knights cut the lead to 4-3 after Michael Carbone (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) drew a bases loaded walk and Garret Keenan (Massapequa, N.Y.) hit a two-run single. But the Newberry offense answered right back on an RBI double by love and a run-scoring single from Horvath to extend the lead to 6-3.

Gary Hersey entered the game for Newberry in the top of the sixth in a save situation after Roman's night was finished. After a sacrifice bunt moved two runners into scoring position with one out, Marshall hit a sacrifice fly to narrow the lead to 6-4. Hersey induced a groundout to get out of the inning and set up the Newberry offense.

The scarlet and gray separated themselves from St. Rose with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Love, Pollack, Haskins and Jose Rosa (Keystone Heights, Fla.) all scored in the frame. The inning was aided by a pair of Golden Knight errors and a two-run single by Labrador.

Hersey allowed two runners on base to start the seventh, but sat the next three down in order to earn the save and give Newberry the win. Labrador, Horvath and Haskins all had two-hit games. Smith went 3-for-3 for the Golden Knights.
