Newberry nine fight through snow to beat St. Rose, 5-4
Friday, February 12, 2010

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The snow hit the Smith Road Complex in the seventh inning Tuesday, but it was Andy Vogel's hit in the bottom of the ninth that gave Newberry College a 5-4 win in non-conference baseball action over The College of Saint Rose on Friday afternoon.

Newberry (3-2) had gone ahead with a four-run fifth inning, but St. Rose (0-1) scored three unearned runs in the top of the eighth to tie the game up. Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) ended the game with his third hit of the day.

Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) started the game for Newberry and scattered three hits through six innings, allowing one unearned run. However, he earned no decision after the Golden Knights tied the game on a two-run fielding error and an RBI single from Grant Smith (Waterford, Pa.) in the eighth.

Newberry had taken a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Jim Pollack (Homer, Alaska) and Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) led the inning off with back-to-back doubles followed by an RBI single down the left field line from Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico). A pair of sacrifice bunts by C.J. Tyrkala (Palm Harbor, Fla.) and Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) moved Rohena to third. Pierce Labrador (Lexington, S.C.) drew a walk and Vogel made it a 3-1 game with an RBI single through the left side. Labrador scored when a failed pickoff move by the St. Rose catcher sailed into right field and he scampered home from second base to make it 4-1.

In the top of the eighth, the Golden Knights loaded the bases with no outs on three straight singles from Ryan Burke (Troy, N.Y.), Michael Carbone (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) and Garret Keenan (Massapequa, N.Y.). Derek Marshall (Malone, N.Y.) smashed a ball to shortstop where Horvath could not handle it, plating two runs to make it a 4-3 game. Smith's run-scoring single with two outs tied the game.

With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth, pinch hitter Edmund Gravely (Rocky Mount, N.C.) was hit by a pitch with one out and moved to second on a single through the right side by Labrador. Derek Bley (Upper Arlington, Ohio) replaced him on the base path and scored the game winning run on Vogel's double.

Dale Bennett (Summerville, S.C.) moved to 1-0 on the season, allowing one hit and no runs in the top of the ninth. Tom Weiner (Montrose, N.Y.) was tagged with the loss after allowing the game-winning run. He gave up four hits in 1-1/3 innings of relief.

Vogel finished the game 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs, while Horvath and Rohena were each 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Newberry will face off with Saint Rose again tomorrow in a doubleheader. The first pitch is tentatively set for 1 p.m., but may change based on field conditions.
