Saturday, February 6, 2010

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Newberry College baseball team put up 31 runs in a doubleheader with No. 9 Lynn University on Saturday. The defending national champion Fighting Knights won the nine-inning game, 16-12, while Newberry won the seven-inning nightcap, 19-7.

Newberry's win in the second game snaps a 11-game Lynn unbeaten streak that dates back to the 2009 Sunshine State Conference tournament in May.

Newberry moves to 2-2 overall and will travel to Florence to take on No. 12 Francis Marion on Tuesday night.

Game One: Lynn 16, Newberry 12
Lynn took a 15-0 lead in the first five innings, but Newberry stormed back before falling short in the first game of the day.

The Knights built their lead steadily in the opening innings before exploding for a six-run fifth inning that was punctuated by a three-run homerun from Matt Noble that gave LU the 15-0 lead.

But Newberry would not go away quietly despite the sizeable disadvantage. After Pierce Labrador (Lexington, S.C.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the top of the sixth, Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) reached on a bunt single and Labrador advanced to third on when Edmund Gravely (Rocky Mount, N.C.) flied out to right.

Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) plated both players with a double down the left field line and Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) cut the lead to 15-4 with his first homerun of the season to right field.

Lynn scored one run in the bottom of the sixth, but Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) led off the top of the seventh with a solo homer to left field to cut the lead to 16-5. Labrador singled up the middle and went to second on a wild pitch and Gravely went to first when he was hit by a pitch. Love hit an RBI single and Gartman recorded an RBI groundout. Jim Pollack (Homer, Alaska) hit an RBI double and C.J. Tyrkala (Palm Harbor, Fla.) hit an RBI single before the inning was out to make it 16-9 with two innings to play.

In the top of the eighth, Gravely recorded an RBI groundout and Love hit a two-run homerun to make it 16-2, but the side was retired in order in the top of the ninth to give Lynn the win.

Love was 3-for-5 with five RBIs and three runs scored, while Gartman earned three RBIs. Labrador, Vogel, Tyrkala and Horvath each had two hits in the game.
