Newberry nine drop rain-shortened game to Nova
Friday, February 5, 2010

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Newberry College baseball team held a 3-2 lead after four and a half innings but the Nova Southeastern offense woke up in a big way as the host Sharks won, 17-3, in a game that was shortened to seven innings due to inclement weather conditions.

Newberry (1-1) got on the board in the first inning as Pierce Labrador (Lexington, S.C.) and Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) each recorded doubles to give Newberry and early 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning.

Nova Southeastern (1-1) scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead before Newberry responded with two unearned runs of its own to take a 3-2 lead after the top of the fifth.

However, the Sharks exploded offensively in the bottom of the fifth, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs to take the lead for good. Brayan Valencia (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth and NSU put another five runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh before the game was called due to inclement weather conditions.

The doubles by Labrador and Love were Newberry's only two hits of the game as Chris Hamper (Melbourne, Fla.) struck out nine Newberry batters in five innings of work. Sean Holsonback (North Augusta, S.C.) was tagged with the loss for the scarlet and gray after allowing seven earned runs in 4-1/3 innings of work.

The scarlet and gray will look to bounce back tomorrow with a tough test, taking on defending Division II National Champions and 10th-ranked Lynn University in a doubleheader. First pitch at the McCusker Sportsplex in Boca Raton, Fla., is set for noon.
