BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - Newberry College pitcher Josh McElwee has been honing his game over the summer in the prestigious Northwoods League with the Battle Creek Bombers. The rising junior right-hander recently picked up his first win of the summer and is tied for fourth in the league in strikeouts.
McElwee, who has made seven appearances and five starts, earned his first win of the Northwoods League season on Tuesday night as the Bombers beat the Green Bay Bullfrogs in Green Bay, Wisc. He went 7 complete innings, allowing one unearned run in the first inning, striking out eight and walking two while scattering six hits. The Bombers won the game 12-3, and are in second place in their division as of Thursday night
Thus far in the season, McElwee has a 1-2 record with a 3.16 ERA, 35 strikeouts, 24 hits and 15 walks in 31.1 innings pitched. The Bombers close out the month of June with a road game at the Wisconsin Woodchucks tonight, followed by two home games against the LaCrosse Loggers on Saturday and Sunday, and two more home games against the Woodchucks on Monday and Tuesday.

Two other Newberry players are currently participating in summer wood bat leagues. Rising junior right-handed pitcher Chris Roman (Kissimmee, Fla.) is playing with the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs of the Florida Collegiate Summer League. He was recently injured but is expected to make a solid contribution to the Diamond Dawgs after completing his rehabilitation.

Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.), a junior college transfer from USC Sumter who will join the scarlet and gray in the fall of 2009, is playing with the New Market Rebels of the Valley Baseball League based in New Market, Va. Gartman is third on the team with a .244 batting average, three RBIs, three doubles and two homeruns in 11 starts.
