Newberry splits Senior Day doubleheader with Nova Southeastern
Sunday, May 3, 2009

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College baseball team celebrated the career of its seniors on Sunday prior to splitting a doubleheader with Nova Southeastern University to close the season. Newberry won the opener, 4-3, before NSU took the second game by a slim 2-1 margin.

Casio Grider (Hephzibah, Ga.), Tyler Hartman (Deland, Fla.), John Kirkland (Orlando, Fla.), Ernie Castellano (Homestead, Fla.) and Jayme Thomas (Clinton, S.C.) were recognized with their parents prior to action at the Smith Road Complex. Newberry ends its season with a 21-25 record, while Nova leaves South Carolina with a 36-17 overall record.

Game One: Newberry 4, Nova Southeastern 3
Kirkland and C.J. Tyrkala (Palm Harbor, Fla.) hit their first career homeruns to propel the scarlet and gray to a win in the opener.

The Sharks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI double from Brayan Valencia (Pembroke Pines, Fla.).

However, Kirkland tied the game up on the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the first, blasting his first collegiate homerun into the pond beyond the left-field fence. Ironically, Kirkland's last homer at any level was on his Senior Day in high school.

Tyrkala followed Kirkland's lead with one out in the second, as he hit a monster blast into the pond to give Newberry the 2-1 lead. Newberry extended the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Thomas Berryhill (Aynor, S.C.) and Hunter Wynn (Vero Beach, Fla.) scored a first-and-third play.

Valencia hit another RBI double for the Sharks in the top of the fifth to knock a run off of the lead, and an RBI single from Dexter Butler (Key West, Fla.) cut the lead to 4-3 and took starter Castellano (5-4 record) out of the game. However, a shutdown performance from Chris Roman (Kissimmee, Fla.) over the course of 1-2/3 innings gave him his third save of the season.

Castellano allowed three runs - only one earned - over 5-1/3 innings, giving up seven hits, but striking out six and walking only one.

Game Two: Nova Southeastern 2, Newberry 1
The scarlet and gray out-hit their guests in the nightcap, but an unearned run in the top of the sixth gave Nova the win in the series finale.

The Sharks got on the board in the first inning when designated hitter Pete Simon (Lake Worth, Fla.) drew a bases-loaded walk. Roman was pulled from the game after 1-1/3 innings, giving way to a solid performance from reliever Dale Bennett (Summerville, S.C.; 1-7 record) who picked up a tough loss.

Nova starter A.J. Hillenbrand (Rockledge, Fla.; 1-0 record) gave up only six hits in six innings, giving up one unearned run in the fifth. Hartman reached on an error to lead off the inning, and a Wynn single put runners on the corner. However, Hartman was called out at the plate on an attempted double steal before John Fogarile (New York, N.Y.) tied the game with an RBI single.

Simon reached on a leadoff error in the sixth for the Sharks. Dale Alberto (Davie, Fla.) moved pinch runner Alan Avila (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) to second with a sac bunt and a single up the middle by Rhys Roberts (Parkland, Fla.) plated the go-ahead run.

Hillenbrand stranded a Newberry runner on second base in the sixth and Jose Velasquez (Miami, Fla.) picked up the save by retiring the side in order in the seventh.
