Saturday, April 18, 2009

NEWBERRY, S.C. - For the second straight season, the Newberry College baseball team defeated Lincoln Memorial University by one run in the final South Atlantic Conference game of the season to make it into the conference tournament. John Kirkland's RBI single in the sixth inning of the nightcap gave Newberry a 2-1 win after the scarlet and gray dropped the first game, 8-1.

Newberry wraps up the regular season at 17-21 overall with a 10-11 South Atlantic Conference record to earn the fifth seed in next week's Food Lion SAC Tournament in Wingate, N.C. Lincoln Memorial is 32-18 with a 9-13 SAC record and will miss out on postseason play. Official pairings for the Food Lion SAC Tournament will be released Sunday.

Game One: Lincoln Memorial 8, Newberry 1
For the second straight contest, the scarlet and gray were close early until the Railsplitters pull away in the middle innings. A pair of three-run frames in the fifth and sixth innings gave LMU the win and forced the postseason issue in the second game.

The Railsplitters took a 2-0 lead on a pair of unearned runs in the first inning. Bryon Izzo (Miramar, Fla.) led off with a single and Cody Pack (Andersonville, Tenn.) reached on an error. The pair scored with two outs on a throwing error after a failed double play attempt.

Newberry got on the board for the first time in the series in the bottom of the second. Kirkland (Orlando, Fla.) hit a single under the third baseman's glove with one out and moved to third on a double by Hunter Wynn (Vero Beach, Fla.). Tyler Hartman (Deland, Fla.) drove Kirkland home with an RBI groundout to cut the lead in half.

LMU extended its lead to 5-1 in the top of the fifth on an RBI double from Pack and a run-scoring single by Ralph Rosas (Bayamon, Puerto Rico). The lead was pushed to 8-1 in the top of the sixth on RBI hits from Izzo, Pack and Rosas. The first three batters in the LMU order combined to hit 6-for-14 with six runs and six RBIs in the game.

The Railsplitters benefitted from solid starting pitching, as the LMU starter went the distance for the second consecutive game. Mitch Kramer (7-1 record; Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada) allowed one earned run on six hits, striking out five and walking none in nine innings. Newberry starter Chauncey Mattei (1-4 record; Greenville, S.C.) picked up the loss after allowing five runs - three earned - on four hits in 4-1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked three. Reliever Chris Roman (Kissimmee, Fla.) allowed three earned runs on six hits, striking out four and walking one in 4-2/3 innings on the hill.

Game Two: Newberry 2, Lincoln Memorial 1
Solid pitching and timely hitting in the sixth inning allowed Newberry to pull out the win in the seven-inning nightcap and earn a trip to the Food Lion SAC Tournament.

Newberry took the lead for the first time in the series in the bottom of the second. Kirkland led off the frame with a single through the left side and moved to third on a single down the right field line by Jim Pollack (Homer, Alaska). After a Wynn sac bunt pushed Pollack to second, John Fogarile (New York, N.Y.) grounded out to shortstop to drive Kirkland home and give Newberry a 1-0 lead.

LMU's John Couch (Bonnyman, Ky.) led off the top of the third with a double down the right field line and tied the game at 1-all on an RBI single from Pack with two outs.

Newberry starter Ernie Castellano (Homestead, Fla.) was solid throughout his appearance, allowing only one run on five hits, striking out three and walking two in 5-1/3 innings of work. LMU starter Jeff Ludlow (1-6 record; Palm Harbor, Fla.) was efficient through five innings, but gave up a leadoff single to Jose Rosa (Keystone Heights, Fla.) in the bottom of the sixth.

After Ludlow was pulled, Ray Burchell (Corryton, Tenn.) allowed a sac bunt and walked Edmund Gravely (Rocky Mount, N.C.) to put runners on first and second with one out. Kirkland responded by hitting a single to centerfield on the first pitch he saw to put Newberry ahead 2-1.

Newberry closer Thomas Berryhill (2-1 record; Aynor, S.C.) allowed no hits in 1-2/3 innings of relief and retired the last three batters to earn the victory and help push Newberry into the conference tournament.
