Newberry splits SAC weekend pair with No. 10 Tusculum
Saturday, April 11, 2009

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College baseball team earned a split of two South Atlantic Conference games with No. 10 Tusculum College at the Smith Road Complex on Saturday. Tusculum won Friday's suspended game, 4-2, before Newberry won Saturday's game by a 5-2 count.

Newberry moves to 16-18 overall and 9-9 in South Atlantic Conference play, while 10th-ranked Tusculum is now 28-12 overall and 15-2 in the SAC. Newberry takes on Augusta State on the road in non-conference action at 3 p.m. Tuesday before returning home to host Lincoln Memorial in a three-game SAC series on Friday and Saturday at Smith Road.

Friday's Game: No. 10 Tusculum 4, Newberry 2
Tusculum put up three runs on Friday night before the game was suspended due to heavy rains in the bottom of the sixth, and held off a Newberry charge to get the 4-2 win. C.J. Hillyer (Abington, Mass.) scattered four hits over 5-1/3 scoreless innings to pick up the win for Tusculum. His season record is now 6-1.

The Pioneers took the lead in the top of the first inning on RBI hits from Jared Richmond (Fort Smith, Ark.) and Paul Finger (Lincolnton, N.C.). Sean Finucane (Cortland, N.Y.) pushed the lead to 3-0 with an RBI double down the right field line in the top of the fifth. Newberry stranded runners on third base in the fourth and fifth innings, but could not convert on those opportunities.

Play was halted on Friday night when the storms rolled in with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Chauncey Mattei (Greenville, S.C.) was effective for Newberry on the mound, giving up three runs - all earned - and striking out three while scattering 10 hits over six innings.

Newberry got on the board in the seventh inning on Saturday afternoon, cutting the deficit to a single run. Consecutive singles from John Kirkland (Orlando, Fla.) and Hunter Wynn (Vero Beach, Fla.) to start the frame put runners on the corners with no outs. Edmund Gravely (Rocky Mount, N.C.) plated the first run with a groundout to second base and a single to right field from Phillip Bartz (LaCrescent, Minn.) made it a 3-2 game. However, TC pitcher Rob Currie (St. Charles, Ill.) induced a pop-out double play to halt Newberry's threat.

The scarlet and gray stranded runners on second and third in the bottom of the eighth, and Nate Grabowski (Pennellville, N.Y.) hit his fifth homerun of the season in the top of the ninth to extend the lead to 4-2. Currie retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to give Tusculum the win and pick up his fifth save of the season.

Saturday's Game: Newberry 5, No. 10 Tusculum 2
A three-run sixth inning gave Newberry its first lead of the series and Thomas Berryhill (Aynor, S.C.) hit his first homerun of the season to help Newberry split the series against the 10th-ranked team in the nation.

Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) struck out six and allowed six hits in six innings, allowing only one run on the way to the win, moving his record to 5-1. That one run came on a towering homerun to right-center from Grabowski with two outs in the third to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.

Newberry tied the game at 1-all in the bottom of the third when Zach Upton (Clearwater, Fla.) hit a clutch two-out RBI single to right field.

Newberry surged ahead with four consecutive base hits in the bottom of the sixth. After Tusculum starter Boo Morrow (Lexington, Ky.) hit Kirkland with one out, Wynn put runners on first and second with a single through the right side. Jose Rosa (Keystone Heights, Fla.) gave Newberry the lead with an RBI single to center. Bartz appeared to extend the Newberry rally even further with a hit off the top of the fence in left-center, but he passed Rosa on the basepath. Despite the miscue, one run scored and Rosa advanced to third.

Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.) hit the fourth straight single to plate Rosa, give Newberry a three-run lead and blast Morrow from the game. Morrow picked up the loss, giving up four runs - three earned - on 10 hits in 5-2/3 innings of work. He struck out three as his record moved to 3-4 on the season.

Tusculum scratched one run back in the top of the seventh on an RBI groundout from Richmond, but Berryhill pushed the margin back to three runs with a monster homer to the deepest park of the park in left center to lead off the bottom of the frame. Ernest Castellano (Homestead, Fla.) retired the side in order in the top of the eighth and Berryhill allowed only one baserunner in the ninth to pick up his seventh save of the year.
