Newberry nine drop pair on the road to Lions
Saturday, March 21, 2009

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Newberry College baseball team dropped a pair of South Atlantic Conference games to the Lions of Mars Hill College at Henderson Field on Saturday afternoon. MHC took the first game by an 8-7 score on a Mike Dobre walkoff single, and the Lions' Justin Hall pitched a four-hit shutout in the 8-0 second game.

Newberry falls to 11-12 overall and 5-3 in SAC play with the losses, while Mars Hill is now 15-15 overall and 4-6 in the league. The two teams will close their series tomorrow. First pitch at Henderson Field is set for 1 p.m.

Game One: Mars Hill 8, Newberry 7
In a game that appeared to be set to go into extra innings, Mars Hill's Mike Dobre (Pompano Beach, Fla.) smacked a two-out RBI single to left field in the bottom of the ninth to give Mars Hill the 8-7 opener win.

Mars Hill opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, when Corry DiBiase (Orlando, Fla.) hit a two-out, two-run single for an early 2-0 lead. Newberry took the lead in the top of the fourth with a five-run inning. Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) got the rally going with a solo homerun to left field with one out to cut the lead to 2-1.

Jim Pollack (Homer, Alaska) followed that up with a double to left center and Casio Grider (Hephzibah, Ga.) reached on a bunt single. Phillip Bartz (LaCrescent, Minn.) drew a two-out walk to load the bases and Derek Bley (Upper Arlington, Ohio) cleared the bases and gave Newberry its first lead of the game with a three-run double to right.

The Lions responded with four runs in the bottom half of the fourth to take a 6-5 lead, including a three-run homer from Brian Williams (Orlando, Fla.). A Pollack RBI single in the top of the fifth tied the game back up a 6-all.

In the top of the seventh, Newberry forced the issue early with aggresive baserunning, and a Grider RBI single gave Newberry the 7-6 lead. However, the scarlet and gray left the bases loaded to end the inning. Dobre hit a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh to re-tie the game. Newberry was unable to get a runner on base in the eighth or ninth, and three consecutive two-out singles from MHC in the bottom of the ninth gave the hosts the win.

Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) struck out eight batters in four innings, but gave up six runs. He picked up no decision. Chris Roman (Kissimmee, Fla.) struck out six batters in 4-2/3 innings on the hill, but the two late runs tagged him with the loss. His record now stands at 2-4 on the season. Thomas White (Irmo, S.C.) closed the game with two perfect innings to pick up the win for the Lions. Grider was 3-for-5 in the game for Newberry, while Pollack went 2-for-4.

Mars Hill got on the board for the first time in the bottom of the second inning on a two-out, two-run homerun from Kris Torrance (Pt. Jefferson Station, N.Y.). Newberry starter Dale Bennett (Summerville, S.C.) got into a jam and did not survive the inning, tagging him with the loss. His record now stands at 1-4 on the season. After coming in with the bases loaded, Gary Hersey (Key West, Fla.) forced a popup to get out of the frame with only two Lion runs on the board.

The hosts pulled away in the fourth with five runs. Dobre and Mike Kitt (West Islip, N.Y.) each earned RBIs and DiBiase added a two-run double, running the MHC lead to 7-0. Matt Oleski (West Seneca, N.Y.) closed the scoring with a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the sixth.
