Newberry drops St. Patrick's Day matchup to Pfeiffer, 8-3
Tuesday, March 17, 2009

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College baseball returned to action Tuesday night after a 10-day layoff, but a five-run sixth inning from the visiting Pfeiffer University Falcons gave Newberry an 8-3 loss at the Smith Road Complex.

Newberry (11-9 overall) was led offensively by a 2-for-3 night at the plate from left fielder Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.), while the Falcons (17-7-1) were aided by a 3-for-4 night from catcher Jesse Dunn (Easley, S.C.) and the fourth homerun of the year from Eric Shoemaker (Huntersville, N.C.).

The scarlet and gray got onto the board first in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) reached base on an error by the second baseman and a bloop double douwn the left field line from Morin put two runners in scoring position. After Zach Upton (Clearwater, Fla.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Derek Bley (Upper Arlington, Ohio) drove home the game's first run with a sacrifice fly to deep right.

Pfeiffer answered with two outs in the third, when Shoemaker hit a blast over the wall in right field to drive starter Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) from the game. McElwee went 2-2/3 innings, allowing only one run but picking up no decision.

Dale Bennett (Summerville, S.C.) relieved McElwee and did not give up a run in 2-1/3 innings, while also escaping a bases loaded jam in the fourth. However, Pfeiffer starter Jonathan McDaniel (Mocksville, N.C.) and reliever Nick Fogelman (Waxhaw, N.C.) kept the Newberry off the board as well, combining for eight innings of work and allowing just one unearned run.

The Falcons put together a five-run inning in the top of the sixth to tag Newberry reliever Chris Roman (Kissimmee, Fla.) with the loss. Pfeiffer had five consecutive runners reach base to start the inning. Roman gave up four hits and walk, and a two-run single up the middle from Zach Strickland (Liberty, N.C.) gave Pfeiffer its first lead of the game. Preston Lyon (Gastonia, N.C.) scored from third on an error to put up what would prove to be the winning run. The Falcons held a 6-1 lead by the end of the inning.

Pfeiffer put single runs on the board in the seventh and eighth to lead by as much as 8-1 before Newberry scratched across two runs in the ninth. A pair of Falcon errors and an RBI single from Roland Haskins (Alexandria, Va.) cut the lead to 8-3, but it was too little too late and Pfeiffer took the win in the first leg of the home-and-home series.

Fogelman (6-0) pitched five innings of shutout baseball to pick up the win for Pfeiffer, while Roman (2-3) was tagged with the loss for Newberry. The two teams will meet up in the second leg of the series tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Pfeiffer's Joseph Ferebee Field in Misenheimer, N.C.
