ROCK HILL, S.C. - Newberry hurler Josh McElwee and Mars Hill outfielder Brian Williams have been named the South Atlantic Conference Baseball Pitcher and Position Player of the Week announced conference officials Tuesday.
McElwee, a 6-4, 200-pound sophomore right-hander from Andrews, S.C., posted a 1-0 record in his two starts during the week (both Newberry wins). In Newberry's 13-2 win over Carson-Newman, McElwee recorded 15 strikeouts in his eight-inning effort. In fact, the first nine outs recorded were McElwee punchouts. His strikeout tally is tied for fifth most in SAC history. The Andrews High School graduate fanned three batters in his two innings of work against Bloomsburg.
McElwee, the defending SAC Freshman of the Year, earns conference Pitcher of the Week honors for the first time in his career.
Williams, a 5-10, 195-pound senior from Orlando, Fla., hit .722 in four games last week with 14 RBI, two doubles, a triple and two home runs for the Lions. The Palm Beach Atlantic product went 13-for-18 on the week, including 10-of-13 (.769) in a three-game SAC series at Wingate. He started the week going 3-for-5 with four RBI in a 16-14 loss to No. 23 Anderson. In the second game of the Wingate series, Williams went 5-for-6 with seven RBI, including a triple and two home runs.
The SAC Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week are selected by a vote of the league's nine sports information directors.
