Newberry nine splits chilly twinbill with Bloomsburg Huskies
Monday, March 2, 2009

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College baseball team split a pair of seven inning games with the Huskies of Bloomsburg (Pa.) University at the Smith Road Complex Monday. Bloomsburg won the opener by a 1-0 count and Newberry responded with a 1-0 victory in the nightcap.

Newberry moves to 9-7 overall moving on to this weekend's South Atlantic Conference series with the Eagles of Carson-Newman. The series is set to begin Friday at 7 p.m. at Smith Road, with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. Bloomsburg is now 3-4 overall and is slated to take on Benedict College tomorrow.

Game One: Bloomsburg 1, Newberry 0
The scarlet and gray turned three double plays in the first game, but could not push across a run to give the Huskies the 1-0 win. Grant Kernaghan (Upper Darby, Pa.) allowed six hits and struck out five in the complete game shutout for Bloomsburg, moving his record to 2-0 on the season. Dale Bennett (Summerville, S.C.) only allowed one earned run on four hits, but that would be enough to send his record to 1-2 on the year.

Newberry turned double plays in the first and second to keep runs off the board and got the first runner in scoring position in the third inning on a double down the left field line from Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.). However he was stranded on third to keep the game scoreless.

Bloomsburg led off the fourth with seeing-eye singles through the left side from Nick Ferdinand (Bensalem, Pa.) and Kevin Ward (Clifton Heights, Pa.). A groundout from Tyler Gansner (Lancaster, Pa.) put the pair in scoring position and an RBI groundout by Mike Austin (Dallastown, Pa.) put the Huskies up, 1-0.

Casio Grider (Hephzibah, Ga.) was stranded on third in the fourth and Newberry left the bases loaded in the fifth inning. A three up, three down sixth inning was followed by a pair of flyouts with a runner on second in the seventh to send Newberry to the 1-0 defeat.

Morin was 2-for-3 with a double, and was the only player on either team with multiple hits in the opener.

Game Two: Newberry 1, Bloomsburg 0
Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) started off with two scoreless innings and reliever Ernest Castellano (Homestead, Fla.) moved to 3-1 on the season as he struck out seven Huskies in four innings to make a second inning sacrifice fly stand up for the Newberry win. Thomas Berryhill (Aynor, S.C.) earned his fifth save of the season in a scoreless seventh inning.

McElwee did not allow a runner past second base in the opening two innings and a leadoff single from Zach Upton (Clearwater, Fla.) in the bottom of the second started the rally that would prove to be all Newberry needed for a win in the second game. Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) followed Upton with a bunt single, and a sacrifice bunt from Roland Haskins (Alexandria, Va.) put the pair in scoring position and a deep sacrifice fly from Paul Silliman (Winter Springs, Fla.) plated Upton for the game's only run.

Bloomsburg's Vinny Voorhees (Lakaska, Pa.) picked up the loss to move to 1-1 on the season despite a strong performance, allowing a solitary run on three hits over the course of six innings, while striking out nine batters.

Castellano allowed no runs on three hits in four innings of work with the lead. Both teams had chances to score in the fourth, but both halves of the inning ended with runners stranded on second and third. Berryhill came into the game in the seventh and earned his fifth save on two groundouts and a strikeout.
