Newberry nine drop 6-3 decision to Coker Cobras
Wednesday, February 25, 2009

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Newberry College baseball team fell behind early and was unable to catch up, as the Coker Cobras defeated the scarlet and gray by a 6-3 count at Tom J. New Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Newberry (8-6 overall) sees its three-game winning streak snapped, while the Cobras move to 9-8 overall.

Karl Ankersen (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) led off the bottom of the first with a triple for Coker and was driven in on a groundout from Kevin Schlange (Carson City, Nev.) to give the hosts an early 1-0 lead. The Cobras tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-0 lead. Starting pitcher Chauncey Mattei (Greenville, S.C.; 0-1) picked up his first loss of the season, allowing four runs - only one earned - in three innings of work.

Newberry cut into the lead on an unearned run from Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) in the top of the fourth to make it 4-1, and narrowed it to 4-3 on a two-run double down the right field line from Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.) in the sixth.

However, Coker plated two more runs in the bottom of the sixth and allowed only two more Newberry baserunners in the final third of the game to hold on for the win.

Newberry returns to the Smith Road Complex this weekend for a three-game series against the Huskies of Bloomsburg (Pa.) University. The squads are scheduled to play one nine-inning game at 7 p.m. Saturday, followed by a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m.
