Sunday, February 22, 2009

BREVARD, N.C. - The Newberry College baseball team pounded out 20 hits en route to a 12-4 victory and a sweep of the Brevard College Tornados at Gil Coan Field on Sunday.

Newberry moves to 8-5 overall and 3-0 in South Atlantic Conference action, while Brevard drops to drops to 5-5 overall in league action.

Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) was 4-for-5 in the game with two homeruns and three RBIs in the game. Ernie Castellano (Homestead, Fla.) earned the win in 4-2/3 innings of relief to move to 2-1 on the season, giving up one unearned run and striking out six.

Starter Chris Roman (Kissimmee, Fla.) earned no decision, pitching 4-1/3 innings, allowing three runs - two earned - on three hits, walking four and striking out four.

The scarlet and gray opened the scoring with one out in the second inning, when Rohena smacked his first homerun of the season down the left field line to give Newberry the 1-0 lead.

Newberry tacked onto the lead with four runs in the third. Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.) led off the inning with a single up the middle, which was followed up by a single to left field from Phillip Bartz (LaCrescent, Minn.). John Kirkland (Orlando, Fla.) scarificed the pair into scoring position and they were driven home on a triple over the centerfielder's head from Casio Grider (Hephzibah, Ga.).

Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) plated the third run of the inning with an RBI single through the left side. Jim Pollack (Homer, Alaska) closed out the scoring in the inning with an acrobatic slide around the catcher to touch the plate on an infield single from Jose Rosa (Keystone Heights, Fla.).

Rohena added to lead again in the top of the fifth, when his two-run homer to left field put Newberry up by a 7-0 margin. Rosa scored later in the inning on a wild pitch by Seth Laughter (Fletcher, N.C.).

Brevard brought three runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Jackie Corn (Hendersonville, N.C.) led off the frame with a double off the left field wall and Spencer Linn (Fletcher, N.C.) put runners on the corners on a dropped fly ball. Kellen Moman (Greenville, S.C.) walked to load the bases and Brice Warner (Clover, S.C.) walked to bring the first run home. Stephen Mullis (Charlotte, N.C.) brought a pair of runs home with a one-out single up the middle to push Roman out of the game.

Castellano came into the game and got the next two batters out to put a hold on the damage and set the Newberry lead at 8-3 after five frames.

Jason Merrill (Hendersonville, N.C.) added another Tornado run in the bottom of the sixth, as he was plated on the benefit of two Newberry errors.

Newberry added three more runs in the top of the seventh to take an 11-4 lead. Bartz hit a two-run single through the right side with the bases loaded, and Kirkland followed that up with a run-scoring single through the left side.

Newberry scored its final run of the game in the top of the eighth, when Horvath led off the inning with a triple to right-center and was plated on a bloop single by Pollack.

The scarlet and gray return to action this Wednesday, as they travel to Hartsville to take on the Cobras of Coker College at 3 p.m. Newberry's next home series takes place on Saturday and Sunday, as the Huskies of Bloomsburg (Pa.) University visit the Smith Road Complex. First pitch on Saturday is at 7 p.m., while the Sunday matinee doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.
