Newberry drops series finale to Barry, 6-5
Saturday, February 14, 2009

NEWBERRY, S.C. - A ninth inning rally fell short for the Newberry College baseball team as visiting Barry University won, 6-5, to earn a sweep of the three-game series.

Newberry falls to 5-5 overall with the loss, while Barry is 5-1 going into tomorrow's game with Belmont Abbey at Newberry's Smith Road Complex.

Newberry got on the board first in the bottom of the second without garnering a hit. Jim Pollack (Homer, Alaska) and Roland Haskins (Alexandria, Va.) drew walks and John Fogarile (New York, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.) was hit by a pitch to drive Pollack home and put Newberry up 1-0.

The Bucs took the lead for good in the third inning. Nick Shaw (St. Petersburg, Fla.) scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded, and a two-out double down the third base line by Mitch Rodriguez (Brandon, Fla.) cleared the bases and put Barry up, 4-1.

Shaw extended the lead to 5-1 for the Bucs in the top of the sixth with an RBI double. Newberry responded in the bottom half of the inning when Pollack led off with his second homerun of the season with a solo bomb to the pond beyond the left field fence to make it 5-2.

Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) cut the lead to one run with a two-out, two run triple down the right field line to make it 5-4. Barry loaded the bases in the eighth and pushed the lead to 6-4 with a sacrifice fly from Yan Gomes (Miami, Fla.).

Newberry rallied in the ninth, beginning with a one-out bunt single from John Kirkland (Orlando, Fla.). Horvath walked and a Pollack single up the middle cut the margin to one run. Casio Grider (Hephzibah, Ga.) drew a two-out walk to load the bases, but Zach Upton (Clearwater, Fla.) grounded out for the third out and the Barry sweep.

Dale Bennett (Summerville, S.C.; 0-1) was tagged with the loss for Newberry, allowing four earned runs on five hits in 4-2/3 innings of work. Chris Roman (Kissimmee, Fla.) allowed two earned runs on three hits, striking out four in 4-1/3 innings. Charley Short (Homestead, Fla.; 2-0) earned the win for Barry, while Josh Holmes (Miami, Fla.; 1) picked up the save.

Pollack was 3-for-4 with a homerun, a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored to lead Newberry offensively.

The scarlet and gray return to the diamond on Thursday, Feb. 19, as they welcome the Yellowjackets of West Virginia State University to the Smith Road Complex. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
