Newberry nine drop pair to Barry Bucs
Friday, February 13, 2009

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College baseball team dropped a pair of games to the Barry University Bucaneers at the Smith Road Complex on Friday. The Bucs came away with a tight 8-7 win in 12 innings in Game One, while the guests were 13-3 victors in the second contest.

Newberry drops to 5-4 overall with the losses, while Barry is now 4-1. The two teams will meet for the final game in the series tomorrow at 1 p.m.

Game One: Barry 8, Newberry 7 (12 inn.)
After four hours of a back and forth battle, Barry's Chris Leon (Miami, Fla.) hit an RBI single through the left side in the top of the 12th to give the guests the opening win.

Newberry took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Thomas Berryhill (Aynor, S.C.) led off with a walk, moved to second on a Casio Grider (Hephzibah, Ga.) groundout and scored on an RBI single up the middle from Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.).

Barry tied it up in the top of the second when Yas Gutierrez (Hialeah, Fla.) scored on a wild pitch, and took a 2-1 lead in the third when Danny Lima (Miami, Fla.) scored on a sacrifice fly by Yan Gomes (Miami, Fla.).

Newberry regained the lead in the bottom of the third. Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.) led the inning off with a double and scored on an RBI single from Berryhill. John Kirkland (Orlando, Fla.) reached on a single to left, and both he and Berryhill scored when Horvath's two-run double gave Newberry the 4-2 lead.

Barry jumped back out in front in the top of the fourth. Leon and Nick Shaw (St. Petersburg, Fla.) hit successive two-out RBI singles to tie the game at 4-all and a passed ball on strike three of what should have been the third out of the inning with the bases loaded allowed Barry to take a 5-4 lead.

Newberry knotted the score again in the bottom of the fifth, when Kirkland led off with a double and scored on Horvath's second RBI double of the game. Horvath finished the game 3-of-6 with two doubles and four RBIs.

Barry took a 6-5 lead in the seventh when Manny Pedrozo (Coral Springs, Fla.) hit a one-out solo homerun - his second of the season - to left center.

Newberry jumped back in front in the bottom of the seventh, when a fielding error by the Bucs' second baseman allowed Kirkland and Grider to cross the plat and give the scarlet and gray a 7-6 lead. The visitors tied it back up in the eighth on Gomes' RBI single.

The scarlet and gray managed to get a runners in scoring position with two outs in both the eighth and ninth innings but were unable to convert on the chances, sending the game into extra innings.

Berryhill stepped on the mound with two outs in the eighth to close the game, but wound up goign 3-2/3 innings. He allowed only two hits, but both came in the top of the 12th. Gutierrez led off with a double and went to third on a sacrifice bunt. Leon's single through the left side gave Barry the late lead. Matt Mege (Levittown, N.Y.) got the next two batters to ground into fielders' choices to send Newberry to the palte down by a single run.

Jose Rosa (Keystone Heights, Fla.) managed a two-out single, but the scarlet and gray could not push a run across and were consigned to the loss.

Game Two: Barry 13, Newberry 3
The Bucs hit a pair of homeruns in the third inning that proved to be too much for Newberry to overcome, as the guests took the second game of the series.

Drew Dwelly (New Bedford, Mass.) led off with a walk, and a pair of bunt singles from Shaw and Lima set up a massive grand slam to centerfield from Gomes with no outs to give Barry a 4-0 lead. Newberry got two outs before Yudelmis Hernandez (Miami, Fla.) blasted a three-run shot to right-center to put the Bucs up 7-0.

Newberry manufactured a pair of runs with two out in the bottom of the third after Derek Bley (Upper Arlington, Ohio) drew a walk and Berryhill earned a bunt single. Kirkland was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and freshman John Fogarile (New York, N.Y.) hit a two-run single to right field to cut the deficit to 7-2.

Barry extended the lead back to seven runs with a pair of unearned runs in the fourth, and a Shaw RBI double in the fifth made it 10-2.

Bley scored his second run of the game in the fifth after beating out an infield single, stealing second and moving to third on a throwing error on the steal attempt. Berryhill's RBI groundout to second plated Bley and made it a 10-3 game.

Keefe's homerun off the scoreboard in right field in the sixth as well as an RBI double from Gomes and sacrifice fly by Pedrozo in the eighth made the final score 13-3.
