NEWBERRY, S.C. - Thomas Berryhill smacked a two-run single to left center with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to push the Newberry College baseball team to a 4-2 win over the Golden Knights of the College of Saint Rose at the Smith Road Complex in Sunday's series finale.
Newberry (4-2 overall) took the lead in the bottom of the first when Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) hit a "pond shot" homerun on the first pitch he saw. The ball dropped into the pond beyond the left field wall with two outs to give the scarlet and gray the 1-0 lead.
Starting pitcher Dale Bennett (Summerville, S.C.; ND) was in control for most of the game, and did not allow St. Rose (1-3) a base hit until there were two outs in the fourth. The Golden Knights tied the game in the fifth. Angel Nunez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) singled through the left side to lead off the inning, and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. Nick Alexandrovich (Commack, N.Y.) grounded out to short to bring Nunez home and tie the game at 1-1.
Newberry regained the lead in the bottom half of the fifth on a pair of two out errors. Terrence Gray (Newberry, S.C.) reached on an Alexadnrovich error and scored from first when an errant throw from St. Rose third baseman Zachary Halloran (Albany, N.Y.) put Newberry's John Kirkland (Orlando, Fla.) on first and gave Newberry the 2-1 advantage.
Bennett left the game after the seventh inning, allowing only one run on two hits while striking out five. Gary Hersey (Key West, Fla.) allowed the Golden Knights to tie the game in the top of the eighth when Paul Partridge (Uniontown, Pa.) led off with a double. Alexandrovich moved pinch runner Garret Keenan (Massapequa, N.Y.) to third with a sacrifice bunt and Ryan Burke (Troy, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly to center to knot the contest at 2-all.
However, Newberry responded in the bottom half of the eighth to pull out its third win of the weekend. Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) led off the frame with a single up the middle and moved to third when Casio Grider (Hephzibah, Ga.) beat out the throw on a bunt single. Grider stole second and Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.) was intentionally walked to load the bases with none out. Phillip Bartz (LaCrescent, Minn.) reached on a fielder's choice that got Rohena out at the plate, before Berryhill (Aynor, S.C.) ripped a two-run double up the middle on a full count to give Newberry the 4-2 lead.
Berryhill took the mound in the top of the ninth and struck out the first two batters he saw. Derek Marshall (Malone, N.Y.) hit a single up the middle, but Berryhill got Halloran to fly out and give Newberry the win and Berryhill his second save of the weekend.
Bennett, Hersey and Berryhill allowed only four Golden Knights hits, while issuing no walks and striking out seven batters.
The Newberry nine return to the diamond on Tuesday evening, as the scarlet and gray host the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne University in a non-conference contest. First pitch at the Smith Road Complex is set for 6 p.m.
