Newberry splits twi-night twinbill with St. Rose
Saturday, February 7, 2009

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader against the St. Rose Golden Knights, losing the first game, 7-5, and winning the second, 8-1.

Game One: St. Rose 7, Newberry 5

Newberry dropped the first game of the day against St. Rose, 7-5.

Chris Roman (Kissimmee, Fla.) started for Newberry and looked great in his first three innings. In those innings Roman retired 11 batters, allowed no hits and struck out three batters. St. Rose caught fire in the fourth inning and Roman was pulled after allowing four runs.

St. Rose had a monster fourth inning in which the Golden Knights drove in six runs. The inning was highlighted by a three run homer from center fielder Grant Keenan (Massapequa, N.Y.). Zachary Holloran (Albany, N.Y.), Andrew Simpson (Guilderland, N.Y.), and Nick Alexandrovich (Commack, N.Y.) all batted a run in as well in the fourth inning. The Golden Knights would drive in their seventh run in the next inning when Holloran hit an RBI double to center field.

Newberry answered back in the sixth inning by putting four runs on the board. The scarlet and gray earned their first run of the game when Tyler Hartman (Deland, Fla.) hit an RBI double up the middle. Thomas Berryhill (Aynor, S.C.) followed up with a single to left field, driving in two more runs. Berryhill later came home on a wild pitch to cap off the inning.

NC scored again in the seventh inning, cutting the lead to only two runs. John Kirkland (Orlando, Fla.) reached base on an error by the center fielder and later scored on an error by the second baseman. Unfortunately, the scarlet and gray could not earn a run in the final two innings.

Game two: Newberry 8, St. Rose 1

In the second game of the day, Newberry put on a dominant performance by defeating the Golden Knights, 8-1.

Newberry started off the game on a good note when Terrence Gray (Newberry, S.C.) scored off of a throwing error in the first inning. The home team struck again in the bottom of the second when Jovan Rohena (Trujillo, Alto, Puerto Rico) doubled to left center, driving in two runs.

Gray would shine again in the third inning when he drove in two runs with a single to first base. He finished the game with one hit, two runs and two RBIs.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Derek Bley (Upper Arlington, Ohio) doubled through the left side to score a run in the fifth inning. Newberry capped off the night with two runs in the sixth inning thanks to RBIs from Jim Pollack (Homer, Alaska) and Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.).

Ernest Castellano (Homestead, Fla.; 1-0) had a great outing and earned his first win of the season. He pitched six shutout innings and only gave up four hits on the day.

With the split, the Newberry College baseball team improves its record to 3-2 overall. St. Rose moves to 1-2 overall. Both teams will return to Smith Road Complex tomorrow at 1 p.m. to finish their four game series.
