Gray Berryhill plays all nine positions in Senior Day nightcap
Saturday, April 26, 2008

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College baseball team played its final two home games of the season and celebrated Senior Day at the Smith Road Complex on Saturday. Unfortunately for the home nine, the Indians dropped both seven-inning games to Belmont Abbey College, 13-1 and 2-1.

Seniors honored in a ceremony prior to the game were Gray Berryhill (Aynor, S.C.), Chris Bremer (Pt. St. Lucie, Fla.), Stephen Byrd (Vero Beach, Fla.), T.J. Caulder (Gaston, S.C.), Casey Faulkenberry (Camden, S.C.), Travis Howard (Columbia, S.C.), Tyler Manasa (Miami, Fla.), Brandon Mand (Laurinburg, N.C.), Nick Martin (Morehead City, N.C.), Chad Perschbacher (Makanda, Ill.) and Brandon Petty (Melbourne, Fla.).

The Indians drop to 20-31 on the season with the loss, while Belmont Abbey is now 39-19. The two sides will matchup at Abbey Yard in Belmont, N.C., on Sunday in the final games of the season for Newberry.

Game One: Belmont Abbey 13, Newberry 1
The Crusaders jumped on top early and continually pulled ahead in the first game.

Belmont Abbey led 2-0 after the top of the first on RBI singles from Tyler McKenzie and Seth Waller. The lead was extended to 4-0 in the third after a pair of unearned runs.

The Indians scraped a run back in the bottom of the third. Manasa was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Perschbacher put runners on the corners when he reached on an error, while Manasa cut the lead to 4-1 on a double steal attempt.

But the Crusaders pulled away with four runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth. Both McKenzie and Waller would finish the game with three RBIs apiece. The guests capped the scoring with a pair of runs in the seventh.

BAC's Michael Raymond (WP; 5-4) picked up the win, allowing only the one unearned run on three hits, striking out five. Petty (LP; 5-9) allowed eight runs - four earned - on 11 hits in 3.2 innings and was tagged with the loss.

Game Two: Belmont Abbey 2, Newberry 1
Gray Berryhill celebrated Senior Day in Jose Oquendo-esque style as he played at least one out in all nine positions in the seven inning nightcap loss.

McKenzie and Waller proved to be the Indians' undoing once again, picking up the RBIs that would give the Crusaders the lead in the top of the fourth. Chris Bremer (LP; 3-7) cruised through the other six innings, but was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs on four hits in 6.2 innings.

Casio Grider (Hephzibah, Ga.) went 3-for-3 for the Indians, while Scott Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) scored on an error in the bottom of the fourth.

The Indians threatened in each of the final three innings, but a pair of double plays and a Berryhill strikeout snuffed out rallies.

Berryhill started the game at catcher, played one out in the second inning in each of the outfield positions before working his way from third to first. In the top of the seventh, he forced Carlos Vasquez to ground out to short to earn his out on the mound before returning to patrol the outfield.
