Indians start homestand with 4-1 win over West Virginia State
Monday, March 24, 2008

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College baseball team jumped out to an early lead and followed strong pitching performances from Ernie Castellano and Travis Howard to a 4-1 win over visiting West Virginia State University at the Smith Road Complex on Monday.

Newberry moves to 12-20 on the year, while the Yellow Jackets are now 12-6 this season.

Castellano (Homestead, Fla.; 2-0) pitched seven innings, allowing one earned run on four hits, striking out seven and walking five. Howard (Columbia, S.C.; 1) earned the save with two innings of scoreless relief after coming into the game in the eighth inning with two on and none out.

The Indians scored in the bottom of the first without a swing of the bat, when Phillip Bartz (LaCrescent, Minn.) led off with a walk, stole second and then gave NC the 1-0 lead on two passed balls.

Newberry took advantage of another WVSU passed ball in the third to score the second run. Tyler Manasa (Miami, Fla.) was on third when Nick Martin (Morehead City, N.C.) struck out swinging for what should have been the third out. But Yellow Jacket catcher Zeb Reed was unable to handle the pitch, which rolled all the way to the backstop, allowing Martin to reach first and Manasa to score.

The Indians put another run on the board in the bottom of the fourth after Zach Upton (Clearwater, Fla.) appeared to fly out to right for the third out, but the right fielder misread the ball, allowing Upton to proceed all the way to third base. John Kirkland (Orlando, Fla.) capitalized on the situation, plating Upton with a single through the right side.

WVSU put its only run on the board in the top of the eighth after Seth Ramsey led off the frame with a double to center. Chad Chambers' single would later score pinch runner Nathan Martin.

Newberry closed out the scoring in the bottom of the eighth after David Tunstill (Melbourne, Fla.) singled to third, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Casio Grider (Hephzibah, Ga.) hit a two-out single to left field to score Tunstill and give the Indians the final run.

Howard sat the Yellow Jackets down in order in the top of the ninth to seal the win.

The Indians return to action Thursday, when they once again welcome WVSU to the Smith Road Complex. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
