ROCK HILL, S.C. - Newberry College's Brandon Petty has been named the South Atlantic Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced today. Wingate's Dustin Hurdle was named Player of the Week.
Petty, a senior right-handed pitcher from Melbourne, Fla., helped the Indians capture their only win of the week when Newberry defeated conference opponent Carson-Newman in game two of the three-game conference series this weekend. NC lost 6-4 to non-conference opponent Coker College on Wednesday and to league opponent Carson-Newman 4-3 in game one on Saturday before bouncing back to win 1-0 over the Eagles. The Indians lost the final game of the series to the Eagles on Sunday 6-3 in extra innings.
Petty’s only appearance of the week came in Saturday’s win over the Eagles. Petty pitched the full seven innings earning the shutout and allowing only four hits, no runs while striking out five Carson-Newman batters. It was Newberry's first shutout since February 18, 2006.
Last week, Hurdle led the Bulldogs to a 4-2 record against opponents Alderson-Broaddus College, Lander University, Belmont Abbey College and Lincoln Memorial University.
For the week, Hurdle, a junior from Burlington, N.C., hit .429 and had an on base percentage of .552. His stats for the week included nine hits, three doubles, one homerun and four RBI in 21 at bats.
Petty, a preseason first team all-South Atlantic Conference selection, earns Pitcher of the Week honors for the third time in his career at Newberry.
The Indians host Bloomsburg University in a doubleheader Tuesday. First pitch at the Smith Road Complex is slated for 4 p.m.
