Newberry defeats No. 28 Carson-Newman, 1-0, to split doubleheader
Saturday, March 8, 2008

NEWBERRY, S.C. Newberry College split its home doubleheader against No. 28 Carson-Newman College in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon. The Indians defeated the Eagles, 1-0, in the second game after falling, 4-3, in the first.

Newberry improves to 6-16 overall with a 2-6 South Atlantic Conference record while Carson-Newman falls to 17-7 with a 7-4 conference record.

The shutout was Newberrys first in over two years. The Indians last shutout an opponent on February 18 2006, when they beat Anderson College 3-0.

Newberry scored two runs and had the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth in Game One but Thomas Berryhill (Aynor, S.C.) grounded into a fielders choice allowing the Eagles to escape with a 4-3 win.

The Indians fell behind 2-0 in the top of the third when two runs scored on a passed ball.

John Kirkland (Orlando, Fla.) pulled Newberry to within one in the bottom of the inning by stealing home on a double steal. Kirkland led off the inning with a single and stole second. He advanced to third on a Phillip Bartz (LeCrescent, Fla.) single.

The Eagles re-extended their lead to two, jumping up 3-1 on a Nick Achberger double and a Tyler Wynn single.

Newberry managed to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the eighth but Eagles pitcher Corbin Ariel forced Berryhill to pop up to short and induced a double play groundout by C.J. Tyrkala (Palm Harbor, Fla.) to eliminate the threat.

Carson-Newman scored what proved to be the winning run in the top of the ninth with a bases loaded walk by Wesley Dozier.

Freshman Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) took the loss after going 8 2/3 innings and allowing just two earned runs. McElwee continued to add to his impressive strikeout numbers this season, punching out 12 Eagles in the loss.

In Game Two, Brandon Petty (Melbourne, Fla.) threw a complete game seven inning shutout as the Indians won 1-0. Petty allowed just four hits while striking out five to improve to 2-6 this season.

The Indians scored the games lone run in the bottom of the fifth as Tyler Hartman (Deland, Fla.) reached on a single to center and advanced to second on a failed pickoff before scoring on a single by Bartz.

Carson-Newman was able to put a runner on second with less than two outs in the fifth, the sixth and the seventh. But each time Petty and the Indians defense were able to work out of the jam.

Newberry will face Carson-Newman in the rubber game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
