Indians' weekend set comes to a close with 2-1 loss at Nova
Saturday, March 1, 2008

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - After a narrow loss in an show of offensive fireworks in Saturday's nightcap, the Newberry College Indians fell a solitary run short in a pitcher's duel on Sunday, as Nova Southeastern University prevailed, 2-1, in the finale of the four-game weekend set.

Newberry (5-14) took the lead in the top of the seventh inning, when Thomas Berryhill (Aynor, S.C.) led off the inning with a single that was followed by a single through the right side by Paul Silliman (Winter Springs, Fla.). C.J. Tyrkala (Palm Harbor, Fla.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position, and a sacrifice fly from Phillip Bartz (LaCrescent, Minn.) gave Newberry the 1-0 advantage.

However, NSU tied the game in the bottom of the inning when the Sharks capitalized on a similar situation with an RBI bunt single by Jimmy Sposa. NSU would score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning, when right-fielder J.D. Martinez singled home Matt Mindick with one out.

Newberry starter Chris Bremer (Port St. Lucie, Fla.; 1-3) scattered 10 hits through 7.1 innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out three. Brandon Petty (Melbourne, Fla.) stranded two Nova runners in scoring position in the bottom of the eighth by striking out both batters he faced.

The Indians return home for a non-conference game against Coker College at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Newberry will play the first South Atlantic Conference series at the Smith Road Complex with three games against Carson-Newman beginning with a 7 p.m. start Friday. The Indians will play the Eagles in a twinbill on Saturday at 1 p.m.
