Newberry drops rubber game to Lions, 8-1

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Newberry College baseball team took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning, but could not hold on as the Mars Hill College Lions took the third game of the three-game South Atlantic Conference series, 8-1, at Henderson Field on Sunday.

The Indians are now 4-10 overall and 1-5 in conference play, while Mars Hill is 12-7 overall and 2-1 in the league.

Tyler Manasa (Miami, Fla.) scored Newberry's only run in the third inning when he crossed the plate on a wild pitch. MHC took the lead in the fourth inning when Daniel Coffey doubled down the left field line to plate Danny Miller and Brian Williams.

MHC exploded for five runs in the sixth frame on seven hits highlighted by a two-RBI double by Michael Dobre and a two-RBI single by Miller. Devin Presnell ended the scoring in the seventh inning after he hit a sacrifice fly to right field to send Corry DiBiase to the plate.

James Dean and DiBiase recorded three hits apiece to lead MHC at the plate. Dobre, Miller and Austin Boehme tallied two hits each. Dobre, Miller and Coffey recorded two RBI apiece. Carl Taylor (2-1) picked up the win on the mound throwing six innings allowing one run and only two hits. Brendan Van Popering obtained his first save of the season throwing the final three innings.

Phillip Bartz (LaCrescent, Minn.) and Manasa led Newberry at the plate recording two hits each. Manasa scored the Indians' only run. Brandon Petty (Melbourne, Fla.; 0-5) took the loss for Newberry on the hill.

The Indians return home Tuesday for mid-week action against nationally-ranked Georgia College and State University. First pitch at the Smith Road Complex is slated for 7 p.m.
