Indians split twinbill at Mars Hill
Saturday, February 23, 2008

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Newberry College Indians fell just short in the opener of Saturday's doubleheader with the Mars Hill Lions but scored runs late in the second game to pick up their first South Atlantic Conference victory of the season.

Newberry moves to 4-9 overall and 1-4 in SAC play. Mars Hill is now 11-7 overall and 1-1 in league action.

Game One: Mars Hill 4, Newberry 3
Newberry got on the board in their first at-bat scoring three runs highlighted by a two-run homerun by Nick Martin (Morehead City, N.C.). Brian Williams (Orlando, FL) trimmed the Indians' lead to one run at 3-2 in the third inning when he hit a two-run homerun of his own.

Corry DiBiase (Orlando, Fla.) gave the Lions a 4-3 advantage in the fifth frame by hitting a two-run homer over the center field fence. That was all the offense MHC would need as pitchers Justin Hall (Martinsville, Va.) and Thomas White (Irmo, S.C.) were able to hold the Indians at bay for the next four innings.

C.J. Tyrkala (Palm Harbor, Fla.) and John Kirkland (Orlando, Fla.) led Newberry with two hits apiece. Martin hit a two-run homer in the first inning. Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.; 0-1) took the loss on the mound for the Indians after scattering nine hits through six innings of work, striking out eight and walking two.

Hall threw eight innings scattering the same number of hits while striking out five batters to pick up his fourth win (4-0) of the season. White threw the final inning to obtain his third save on the year. DiBiase led MHC at the plate going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a homerun. Williams was also 2-for-4 with a two-run blast. Michael Dobre (Pompano Beach, Fla.) also recorded two hits in the win. He led the game off with a double.

Game Two: Newberry 9, Mars Hill 2
Newberry put two runs on the board in the second inning when Tyler Manasa (Miami, Fla.) singled to left field to plate Kirkland and Jose Rosa (Keystone Heights, Fla.). Dobre crossed the plate on a fielder's choice in the fourth frame to bring the Lions within one run.

The Indians put the game away in the sixth inning, scoring four runs on three hits highlighted by a couple of two-RBI singles from Kirkland and Casio Grider (Hephzibah, Ga.). Newberry added three insurance runs in the seventh inning on three hits and one Lion miscue. Williams ended the scoring in the contest in the bottom of the seventh by hitting a solo shot to right-center to make the final tally 9-2.

Kirkland led NC going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and three RBI. Thomas Berryhill (Aynor, S.C.) went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.
Chris Bremer (Port St. Lucie, Fla.; 1-2) threw a complete game scattering six hits and just a single earned run to pick up the win on the hill.

Dobre and Matt Oleski (West Seneca, N.Y.) led MHC at the plate as both went 2-for-3. Dobre scored one of the Lions' runs. Adam Atkinson (Weaverville, N.C.; 1-1) took the loss on the mound.

The Indians and Lions will conclude the three-game set tomorrow at Henderson Field. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
