Indians drop pair to No. 29 Catawba
Saturday, February 16, 2008

SALISBURY, N.C. - Catawba finished off a weekend sweep of visiting Newberry in South Atlantic Conference baseball action, taking a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park. The 29th-ranked Catawba Indians won by the scores of 5-2 and 10-1 and improve to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in the SAC. Newberry falls to 3-8 and 0-3.

Catawba led 5-0 entering the ninth of the opener behind the strong pitching of Alex Fairweather, who tossed seven shutout innings. The junior allowed just three hits and struck out seven with a pair of walks.

Newberry would come alive in its final at bat. Brandon Mand (Laurinburg, N.C.) led off with a single down the left field line and Nick Martin (Morehead City, N.C.) was hit by a pitch. After Paul Silliman (Winter Springs, Fla.) struck out looking, Jose Rosa (Keystone Heights, Fla.) singled to right field to load the bases. Two runs scored on a fielder's choice by Chad Perschbacher (Makanda, Ill.). After two runs had scored, Newberry had the bases loaded with one out, but Matt Seabolt got the final two out to preserve the win.

Brandon Petty (Melbourne, Fla.; 0-4) pitched all eight innings for Newberry, giving up five runs - four earned - on 11 hits, striking out three.

In the second game, Catawba would use a seven-run fifth to break open a close game, going on top 10-0. David Thomas homered to give Catawba the lead in the third inning and Ryan Query led off the fourth frame to push the lead to 2-0. In the big fifth, Jerry Sands and Chad Baker doubled home runs, while Matt Kepley had a RBI-triple.

Blake Ketner pitched into the sixth and allowed just an unearned run off five hits with five strikeouts. Thomas had three hits in the opener and two in the nightcap and has now homered in three straight games. Kepley had three hits in the second game, while Query had a pair of hits in each game of the double dip.

Thomas Berryhill (Aynor, S.C.) grounded out to earn Newberry's only RBI of the game in the sixth. Chris Bremer (Port St. Lucie, Fla.; 0-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up six earned runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work.

The Indians return to the diamond next Saturday with a three game weekend series at Mars Hill. First pitch for Saturday's twinbill is slated for noon, with one game on Sunday at 1 p.m. Newberry returns home on Tuesday, February 26, for a night game against Georgia College and State.
