Five run eighth propels Newberry to 9-7 win over Wingate to close out SAC Preseason Clash
Sunday, February 10, 2008

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Newberry College Indians closed out their weekend at the SAC Preseason Clash with a come-from-behind 9-7 win over Wingate University at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Sunday. The Indians went 2-2 on the weekend, winning their final two games.

Newberry (3-5 overall) went ahead by two runs in the bottom of the first after Casio Grider (Hephzibah, Ga.) and Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) led the inning off with singles. After Grider stole third, John Kirkland (Orlando, Fla.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. David Tunstill (Melbourne, Fla.) was then plunked to drive in the first run of the game. Nick Martin (Morehead City, N.C.) grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Rohena to give Newberry an early 2-0 advantage.

Phillip Bartz (LaCrescent, Minn.) and Tyler Manasa (Miami, Fla.) led off the bottom of the second with singles, and Bartz gave Newberry a 3-0 lead when the Wingate shortstop commited an error on a grounder by Grider.

The Bulldogs scored an unearned run in the third and tied the game up in the fifth on an RBI double by Aaron Knowles and a run-scoring single by Matt Crump.

Wingate took the lead for the first time in the top of the sixth, when Heath Weatherford's two-out triple to center drove in Blair Troutman for a 4-3 lead. The triple knocked freshman starter Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) from the game after giving up four runs - three earned - on eight hits in 5.2 innings of work. McElwee struck out two and walked three.

The Indians answered back in the bottom half of the sixth. Chad Perschbacher (Makanda, Ill.) earned his way on base with a walk and moved to second on a Grider sacrifice. After Perschbacher advanced to third on a wild pitch, Kirkland drove him home with a two-out single to tie up the game.

Wingate opened the eighth inning with three consecutive hits to load the bases. Rogers delivered with a pinch-hit two-run single to put the Bulldogs ahead 6-4. Wingate added another run on a sacrifice fly from Weatherford to take a 7-4 lead.

But the Indians did not go away quietly, sending 10 batters to the dish in the decisive bottom of the eighth. Two errors by the Wingate shortstop and singles from C.J. Tyrkala (Palm Harbor, Fla.), Rohena and Tunstill all contributed to the late rally.

Senior Travis Howard (Columbia, S.C.; 1-0) picked up his first victory of the season, going 1.1 innings in relief and allowing only one base-runner.

The Indians take their two-game winning streak to Hartsville, S.C., on Wednesday to take on the Cobras of Coker College. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m. South Atlantic Conference play will begin on Friday for Newberry with a three-game series at Catawba College.
