KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - C.J. Tyrkala's RBI single through the right side in the bottom of the 10th inning gave Newberry College a 7-6 win over the College of St. Rose in the SAC Preseason Clash at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Saturday.
Newberry (2-5) breaks a four-game losing streak with the win, while the Golden Knights fall to 0-4 on the season.
Phillip Bartz (LaCrescent, Minn.; 1-0) picked up the win in relief, giving up one hit in the top of the 10th, striking out one.
Nick Martin (Morehead City, N.C.) was 3-of-5 in the game with and RBI triple in the eighth and a leadoff double to start the action in the bottom of the 10th.
St. Rose's Matt Frey started the scoring in the top of the first with a homerun to left center off of Newberry starter Wayne Potts (Orlando, Fla.). Potts scattered seven hits through 6.1 innings giving up three earned runs and striking out five.
Newberry tied the game at ones in the bottom of the first when John Kirkland (Orlando, Fla.) and Robert Danise (Vero Beach, Fla.) executed a double steal, with Kirkland scoring from third. The Indians stole five bases in the game.
The Golden Knights took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second after Chris Morrill led the inning off with a double down the left field line and made it home on a Casey Deuel single.
The Indians knotted the game back up in the bottom of the second when Thomas Berryhill (Aynor, S.C.) scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
St. Rose took a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh, but Newberry took a 4-3 lead at the end of the inning on a two-run homer to left from Casio Grider (Hephzibah, Ga.). The bomb was Grider's first of the season.
After the Golden Knights tied the game up in the top of the eighth, Newberry took a two-run lead in the bottom half. After Danise led off with a single to shortstop, Martin's one out triple to right drove him home and Martin scored on an RBI fiedler's choice by Tyrkala.
However, St. Rose tied the game up in the top of the ninth on RBIs by Frey and pinch hitter Jake Perez. Newberry was unable to score in the bottom half, sending the game to the extra innings.
Bartz allowed two runners on base in the top half of the 10th, but St. Rose stranded both. Martin led the bottom half off with a double to center and went to third on a Berryhill bunt single. Bartz was intentionally walked, having earned hits in his two previous at bats, but Tyrkala's single through the right side gave the Indians the walk-off victory.
The Indians wrap up the SAC Preseason Clash Sunday afternoon against the Wingate Bulldogs. The game - which will not count in the league standings - is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
