Indians split with No. 21 North Georgia to open the season
Saturday, February 2, 2008

DAHLONEGA, Ga. - The Newberry College baseball team battled back from a late deficit in Game Two to earn a split in the Indians' season opening doubleheader with No. 21 North Georgia College and State University on Saturday.

Game One: No. 21 North Georgia 4, Newberry 2
The Indians were held to five hits as the Saints jumped out to a 4-0 lead to take the opener of the twinbill. NGCSU took the lead in the bottom of the third inning when Rob Flanigan hit a two-run homerun to right center off of Brandon Petty (Melbourne, Fla.; 0-1) to put the Saints up, 2-0.

North Georgia extended the lead to 3-0 on a homer to left by Daniel Pettiti to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning, while the fourth and final NGCSU run came on an RBI single to right by second baseman Logan Sharrett. Freshman Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) relieved Petty to close out the inning. Petty went 3-2/3 innings, giving up four runs - all earned - while striking out five and walking two.

The Indians brought back two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Tyler Manasa (Miami, Fla.) earned a one-out single and was moved to second when Nick Martin (Morehead City, N.C.) walked. Preseason All-SAC selection David Tunstill (Melbourne, Fla.) reached on an error by Flanigan, scoring Manasa. Robert Danise (Vero Beach, Fla.) grounded out to the pitcher, scoring Martin, but ending Newberry's scoring in the opener.

NGCSU's Chris Curtis (1-0) earned the win, giving up two unearned runs on four hits in six innings of work. Zack Black earned the save.

Game Two: Newberry 10, No. 21 North Georgia 7
Newberry jumped out to a six-run lead before falling behind by one, but ultimately won with a four-run top of the ninth. The Indians pounded out 18 hits in the game.

Neither team scored until the Indians exploded for five runs with two out in the top of the fifth. After Manasa led off the inning with a strikeout, Martin and Tunstill hit consecutive singles and Martin advanced to third on a flyout by Danise. Following a steal of second base by Tunstill, Thomas Berryhill (Aynor, S.C.) walked to load the bases. Jose Rosa (Keystone Heights, Fla.) reached on an error by Flanigan, scoring both Martin and Tunstill and moving Berryhill to third.

With runners on the corners, John Kirkland (Orlando, Fla.) hit an RBI single down the right field line and Phillip Bartz (LaCrescent, Minn.) smacked an RBI single through the left side to give the Indians a 4-0 lead.

Newberry extended its lead to 6-0 with two runs in the top of the sixth. Martin singled up the middle and moved to third on a double down the left field line by Tunstill. After a pitching change, Danise hit an RBI single up the middle and Berryhill plated Tunstill with a sacrifice fly to left.

The Saints replied in the bottom of the seventh with two runs. Chad Sage led the frame off with a double down the right field line and Neil Krock reached when he was hit by a pitch with one out. Logan Sharrett fouled out to the catcher for the second out, Newberry starter Chris Bremer (Port Saint Lucie, Fla.) was replaced after 6-2/3 innings of five-hit baseball; he would receive no decision for his efforts. However, consecutive RBI singles from Craig Brisson and Davy Wallach to narrow the deficit to 6-2 after seven innings.

After the Indians stranded two runners in the top of the eighth, North Georgia took its first lead of the game with a five run bottom half of the inning that saw 11 Saints come up to the plate. Anders Oster led off the frame with a walk and scored on an RBI double from Petitti. Pettiti went to third on a flyout and Andrew Jones walked, before putting two runners in scoring position by moving to second on a wild pitch. Krock quickly moved those runners along, knocking out a three-run homer to left and making it a tie game. The Saints moved ahead on a Wallach RBI single to center and took a 7-6 lead into the top of the ninth.

The Indians would use small ball in the top of the ninth to score four and pull out the 10-7 victory. Kirkland led off with a single up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bartz. Casio Grider (Hephzibah, Ga.) beat out a single he hit to the pitcher, moving Kirkland to third. After Grider advanced to second on a wild pitch, Manasa hit an RBI single to score Kirkland and tie the game at 7-all. Martin walked to load the bases, which was followed by a Tunstill strikeout. But in just his second collegiate game, Danise pushed the go-ahead runs across the dish with a two-run single up the middle. Berryhill closed out the scoring with an RBI single.

Gary Hersey (Key West, Fla.; 1-0) picked up the win with one strikeout to the only batter he faced to close out the bottom of the eighth. Berryhill picked up the save with two strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth to seal the win.

The Indians will look to win the series Sunday afternoon, with the rubber game taking place at 3 p.m. Newberry returns home Tuesday night for the Grand Opening Day at the Smith Road Complex at 7 p.m. against Francis Marion.
