A chance to help the baseball team as they move to Smith Road
Thursday, January 17, 2008

Dear Newberry College Athletic Enthusiast,
As many of you are aware, the past two years on the road have been a test of perseverance for our baseball student-athletes. We are now at the point that home baseball games are back at Newberry College and we couldn’t be more excited.

The home opener will take place on February 5th at 7 p.m. against Francis Marion University. We have a great team again this year so it promises to be an exciting game.

Though there are areas we are still addressing at the Smith Road venue, our players are energized about their new home. One project we are working on is a locker room for our team. The building which will house a locker room at the Smith Road Complex has yet to be constructed. Therefore, we are currently leasing an off-campus building our players use as a locker room facility.

The facility was once the Sears store on College Street but has been converted and now houses a batting cage, coaches’ offices, and has become a place the team can call their own. The one thing this building is missing is actual lockers. Currently the baseball players have organized their gear in individual piles of chaos.

We hope that with your support we can help alleviate this issue and get the ball rolling on securing lockers for our baseball team. If everyone makes a donation we can reach our goal in short order. The locker we are hoping to purchase for each one of our team members is pictured above. We are in need of at least forty lockers and each costs approximately $400.  These lockers are made of steel and will eventually be transplanted into the new locker room facility when all construction is completed at the Smith Road Complex.

If you would like to help make our locker room a reality, please contact me at your earliest convenience.

I can be reached in the office at 803-321-5247 or by e-mail at matthew.dewitt@newberry.edu. If you would like to mail in a donation please send all correspondence to Attn: Matt DeWitt, Newberry College, 2100 College St., Newberry, SC 29108. Please forward this article to others who you feel may have an interest in this project. Making a gift to Newberry College not only helps support current students but also serves as a great tax deduction. I thank you in advance for your continued support of Newberry College Athletics and Go Indians!

My sincere thanks,
