Gray take 2-1 lead in World Series with 5-1 win over Scarlet

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Gray team can clinch the Fall World Series tomorrow following a 5-1 win over Scarlet Wednesday. Gray leads the series two games to one.

David Guthrie (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) claimed the win on the mound, pitching 2.2 innings and giving up two hits and a run. He was also 1-of-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.

Gray was also aided by a double from Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) and an RBI triple off the left field fence from Gary Hersey (Key West, Fla.). Gray starter Chris Roman (Kissimmee, Fla.) struck out five and walked four in 3.1 innings.

The Gray team got on the board with two outs in the bottom of the second when Derek Bley (Upper Arlington, Ohio) took advantage of a throwing error, taking two bases and scoring from second.

Guthrie snuffed out a Scarlet rally in the top of the fourth, moving from designated hitter to pitcher with the bases loaded and one out. It only took him two pitches to force an inning-ending double play and keep Gray ahead.

The game stayed at 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth, when Gray exploded for four runs. Nick Martin (Morehead City, N.C.) and Thomas Berryhill (Aynor, S.C.) and Guthrie each recorded RBI singles before Hersey's balst off the fence put Gray up 5-0.

Scarlet scratched across its only run of the game in the top of the sixth on a bases loaded groundout by Jose Rosa (Gainesville, Fla.). But the rally ended with two runners in scoring position when Gray Berryhill (Aynor, S.C.) was robbed of a base hit by a diving Bley to end the frame.

Gray can clinch the series with a win in Game Four, which begins Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Smith Road Baseball Complex.
