Scarlet beats Gray, 5-0, to take early lead in World Series

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Scarlet team shut out the Gray team, 5-0, in the opener of the best-of-five World Series at the Smith Road Baseball Complex Monday evening. Wayne Potts (Orlando, Fla.) pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless ball to lead Scarlet and earn the game's MVP honors.

Freshman Robert Danise (Vero Beach, Fla.) was the only player to collect multiple hits in the seven-inning game, as he singled in the first inning and the fourth inning. Shane Fisher (Greensboro, N.C.) struck out two batters in the seventh to seal the win for Scarlet.

John Kirkland (Orlando, Fla.) drove in two runners - one on a groundout to short in the second, and another on a double to left center in the fourth. Kirkland also stole two bases, while Thomas Berryhill (Aynor, S.C.) stole a pair of bases for Gray.

The Scarlet team will look to take a convincing 2-0 lead in the series on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Smith Road Baseball Complex.
