Indians Fall to Bulldogs at Food Lion SAC Tournament

GREENVILLE, S.C. � Sixth-seeded Wingate University scored three runs in the first and third innings to defeat fifth-seeded Newberry College 7-3 at the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament at Greenville, S.C.

Wingate (23-29) will play the loser between Carson-Newman/Catawba on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.  Newberry (19-30) is eliminated from the tournament.

Wingate plated three two-out runs in the first to take a 3-0 lead.  Shaughn Neal drove in a pair of runs with a single down the line in left while Spencer Robinson drove home a run with a single through the right side.

Newberry got a run in the second when Scott Horvath scored from second on an error to plate the first run for the Indians. 

In the Bulldog third, Michael Parker drove in Josh Benton with a double to left and Neal tallied his second RBI of the game when he drove home Parker with a single.  A single by Aaron Knowles would plate Neal, giving Wingate a five-run lead.

Benton finished 3-for-3 for Wingate with two runs scored and an RBI.  Brandon Mand was 1-for-2 with an RBI for Newberry.

Wingate starter Tyler Almond (4-3) received the win, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing six hits while striking out four.  The loss was charged to starter David Tunstill (0-1)
