Newberry can't hold early lead, lose to Pacers

AIKEN, S.C. - USC Aiken would break a 7-7 tie in the in the seventh inning to go on to the 11-7 victory over Newberry College on Wednesday evening at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.

The Pacers improve to 31-12 on the season while the Indians fall to 17-26.  Newberry will close out the South Atlantic Conference play this weekend as they play host to Catawba College in Greenville, S.C. Friday's game will begin at 7:00 p.m. while the doubleheader will begin on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.

The Indians jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first. Leadoff hitter Tyler Manasa drew a walk and Nick Martin followed and belted the first pitch he saw over the wall in left for a two-run homerun, his second long-ball of the season.

The Pacers would match Newberry in their half of the first to tie the game at 2-2.  Daryl Pui led off with a double and moved to third on a fly ball. After Chris Sheehan and Ken Raborn drew two-out walks, Zach Cooper would drive in two runs with a single to right to even the score.

Newberry would benefit from the long-ball once again in the second, scoring four runs in the frame to take a 6-2 lead. With one out, Matt Awtrey would be hit by a pitch and promptly steal second base. On a 3-2 count, Brandon Gardner would belt a two-run homerun to left, his first of the season to break the tie. With two outs and runners in scoring position, David Tunstill provided a single up the middle to plate two runs and gave the Indians a four-run lead.

USC Aiken would close the Newberry lead to two runs at 6-4 in the third. Sheehan led off with a single and Raborn would draw a walk. With the bases loaded and only one out, Marc Joehnk would single up the middle to plate two runs.

After the Pacers cut the Indian lead to 6-5 with a run in the fourth, they would take the lead in the sixth, plating two runs to go up 7-6. Joehnk led off the frame with a triple into the gap in right-center and would score on a one-out groundout by Pui to tie the game at 6-6. With the bases loaded and two outs, Raborn drew a walk which scored Josh Eachues from third, giving USC Aiken a one-run lead.

The Indians played a little small-ball in the seventh to tie the game at 7-7. Martin drew a one-out free pass, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and moved over to third on a single by Tunstill. Ryan Easterby would lay down a safety squeeze to plate Martin from third to tie the game for the third time in the evening.

USC Aiken would take the lead for good in their half of the seventh, plating two runs to take a 9-7 lead.  Ben Tankersley led off with a single to right and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Joehnk. After a throwing error by pitcher Ernie Castelano (2-4) moved Tankersley to third and Brett Spivey drew a walk, the Pacers executed a double steal with the two players to break the tie and give the Pacers an 8-7 lead. Eachues would make it a 9-7 game when he drove in Spivey with a single up the middle.

Gardner and Tunstill led Newberry at the plate, going 2-for-3 and 2-for-4 respectively. Pui and Tankersley each collected three hits for USC Aiken while three different Pacer players recorded two RBIs each.

Mark Yarbrough (3-1) earned the victory, pitching 4.0 innings while striking out five.
