Two Indians appear in top 50 in individual national statistics

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Newberry Indians baseball team featured two players ranking in the top 50 in individual categories in the NCAA national statistics for Division II. In games through April 1, junior Stephen Byrd's seven wins placed him fourth. The Vero Beach native has appeared in a team-high 17 games, starting four. Byrd is 7-1 on the year with a 4.76 earned run average in 56.2 innings pitched and has only allowed eight walks and eight extra-base hits.

Fellow junior Brandon Petty stands 28th in the nation in strikeouts with 53. In 12 appearances and 78 innings pitched, the Melbourne, Fla. native has an ERA of 3.12 with four complete games and opponents are hitting just .268 against the right-hander.

In team statistics, the Indians just missed the top 50 in two categories. Newberry ranks 52nd in steals per game (1.64) and 64th in fielding percentage (.956).
