WINGATE, N.C. - The Newberry College baseball team split a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field on the Wingate campus. Newberry holds a 14-20 overall record and is now 8-7 SAC record. Wingate is 16-17 overall and 8-6 in the SAC.
The Bulldogs took the first game 1-0, while Newberry was victorious in the second game 6-1. Newberry will host #16 Augusta State University on Tuesday.
Game #1 � Wingate 1, Newberry 0
Wingate was led by freshman pitcher Tyler Almond (Oakboro, N.C.) in game one of the twin bill as the Bulldogs defeated the Indians 1-0. Almond stuck out four and walked one while scattering five hits on his way to six innings of shut-out ball to improve to 3-1 on the season. Sophomore Zak Laws (Lenoir, N.C.) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to notch his fourth save of the season.
Wingate scored its lone run in the fifth inning. Freshman centerfielder Grayson Tanner (Sumter, S.C.) singled and sophomore shortstop Michael Parker (Snow Camp, N.C.) drew a walk to put runners at first and second. Bulldog senior second baseman Shaughn Neal (Matthews, N.C.) ripped an RBI double past a diving a senior third baseman Ryan Easterby (Charleston, S.C.).
Newberry out-hit Wingate 5-3, but the visitors� only real threat came in the fourth innings when the Indians placed runners on second and third with one out. Almond then forced a groundout and a strike out to end the inning.
Easterby recorded two of the Indians� five hits during the opener. Freshman pitcher Dale Bennett (Summerville, S.C.) tossed 4 1/3 strong innings for Newberry, allowing one run on three hits and recording two strikeouts. Bennett is 3-3 on the season.
Game #2 �Newberry 6, Wingate 1
Newberry sophomore Ernie Castellano (Homestead, Fla.) recorded a complete game victory for the Indians in game two of the doubleheader. Castellano scattered seven hits in seven innings, allowing one run and striking out seven to improve his record to 2-2 on the year.
Indian junior infielder David Tunstill (Melbourne, Fla.) and junior outfielder Nick Martin (Morehead City, N.C.) drove in a combined five of Newberry�s six runs in game two. Tunstill was three-for-four with a homerun and two RBI. Martin was two-for-three, including a three-run double in the top of the sixth inning to give the Indians a 6-0 cushion.
Wingate senior designated hitter/pitcher Josh Benton (Gold Hill, N.C.) was two-for-three at the plate with a double and a runs scored. Tanner was one-for-three with one RBI.
Bulldog freshman right-hander Lee Oxendine (Laurinburg, N.C.) falls to 1-3 on the season. Oxendine pitched five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and recording four strikeouts.
