WINGATE, N.C. - Newberry College pulled back over the .500 mark in South Atlantic Conference action with a 6-3 over Wingate University (15-16, 7-5 SAC) in game one of what was supposed to be a double-header on Saturday afternoon. The Indian win upped Newberry's overall record to 13-19 and 7-6 in conference.
After Indian starter Brandon Petty yielded two runs in the first two innings, Newberry took control of the game with all six runs coming in the middle three innings.
Newberry picked up three runs to take the lead in the top of the fourth with the first run the result of a Ryan Easteby double. Matt Webb had a single to left field and Nicholas Young batted in a run with a fielder's choice.
In the top of the fifth, Scott Horvath reached base after being plunked by Bulldog starter Richard Allred. Then, Indian second baseman David Tunstill struck for a two-run homer over the left field wall to give Newberry a 5-2 lead. The homerun was Tunstill's second of the season.
Junior pitcher Stephen Byrd picked up his sixth win of the season in relief of Petty. The Vero Beach, Fla. native pitched 4.2 innings of perfect baseball retiring all 14 batters faced.
Newberry catcher Brandon Gardner went 3-for-4 on the day with two doubles and run scored. Tunstill had two hits with two RBIs and two runs scored. Easterby finished 2-for-5 with a double, RBI, and a run scored.
