JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. � Carson-Newman starting pitcher Matt Teague pitched 7.1 innings, allowing on two earned runs in game one while the Eagles scored 13 runs on 13 hits to sweep a SAC doubleheader from Newberry College on Saturday afternoon at the Silver Diamond. The scores of the game were 8-5 and 13-3.
In game one the Eagles (13-6, 6-1 SAC) would jump out to a quick 5-0 in the first inning. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Adam Kefauver drew a walk that brought home Brandon Burchfield from home. Third baseman Nick Acheberger drove in a pair of runs with an RBI single while first baseman Derek Long capped off the inning with a two-run single.
The Indians (7-12, 3-2 SAC) would plate a run in the second to make the score 5-1. Anthony Dillenger wrapped a one-out double to left-center and eventually scored on a fielder�s choice.
After the Eagles extended their lead to 8-1, the Indians fought hard to make a comeback, scoring three runs in their half of the eighth inning. Scott Horvath and David Tunstill had back-to-back singles with one out in the frame. Ryan Easterby would drive Horvath in from second with a single. With the bases loaded, Carson-Newman reliever Logan Simmons committed a balk, which allowed Tunstill to score from third. Dillenger would later contribute a sacrifice fly to right which scored Easterby to cut the Carson-Newman lead to 8-4.
In the ninth inning, the Indians would plate one run but could not get any closer as they fell by 8-5.
Tunstill led Newberry in batting with a 2-for-5 performance along with a run scored. Dillenger finished 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.
Carson-Newman was led in batting by Tyler Wynn, who finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.
Teague picked up the victory while Indian starter Brandon Petty (0-2) took the loss.
In game two, the Eagles would score four runs over the first three innings to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Acheberger would double home a run while Michael Brown would single home another run to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead in the first.
Carson-Newman would score six runs in the sixth to go on to the eventual 13-3 victory.
For Newberry, Dillenger led the Indians at the plate in game two, going 2-for-3 with a run score. Horvath finished 1-for-2 with two runs driven in. For Carson-Newman, Brown finished 3-for-4 while driving in four runs.
Cole Draughn picked up the win for Carson-Newman while Dale Bennett (3-1) received his first loss of the season.
The two teams will complete their three-game series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
