Wednesday, February 28, 2007

GREENVILLE, S.C. USC Upstate scored nine unearned runs in the fourth inning as the 24th-ranked Spartans went on to the 17-8 victory over Newberry College in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Municipal Stadium.

USC Upstate moves to 11-6 on the season while the Indians fall to 7-10.  Newberry will travel to Jefferson City, TN this weekend to face Carson-Newman College in a three-game South Atlantic Conference series.  The series will begin on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 noon while a single game will be played on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

The Spartans jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning.  Kyle Simpson and Michael Winfield each had back-to-back singles while Eric Guillen reached safely on a bunt single to load the bases with nobody out.  Jake Rollins drew a walk to bring home Simpson and John Caddell followed with a sacrifice fly to left that plated Winfield.  With two outs, Bret Hansen doubled home two runs to give USC Upstate a four-run advantage.

The Indians cut into the Upstate lead in the home half of the second, scoring two runs on two hits.  Matt Webb singled to center and eventually scored on a sharp single up the middle by centerfielder Tyler Manasa.  Chad Perschbachers sacrifice fly to left would plate Brandon Gardner to make it a two-run game.

After the Spartans scored a run in the third to go up 5-2, Newberry responded once again with two run in the home half of the third to cut the Upstate lead to 5-4.  David Tunstill led off with a single and later advanced to third on a one-out single to right by Brandon Mand.  Tunstill would then score on a wild pitch by Upstate reliever Matt Branham to make it a 5-3 game.  With runners at the corners and one out, Newberry executed a double steal as Mand stole home to make it a one-run game.

In the Upstate fourth, Winfield would triple home two runs while Hansen later followed up with a two-run triple of his own to give the Spartans the considerable lead.

Newberry was led at the plate by Manasa, who finished 2-for-6 with three runs batted in.  Webb finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored while second baseman Casey Faulkenberry was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI on the afternoon.

Hansen led the Spartans offensively, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and four runs batted in.  Winfield finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two runs batted in.

Justin Hayes (1-0) received the victory for Upstate.  The loss was credited to Ernie Castelano (0-1).  Indian reliever Travis Howard pitched five strong innings on 81 pitches while giving up no earned runs on the afternoon.
