Newberry splits Friday double-header with Barry
Friday, February 23, 2007

NEWBERRY, S.C. Newberry College baseball split a Friday double-header with Barry University with a 5-4 win in game one and a 6-4 loss in game two at Greenville Municipal Stadium.

The Indians once again pulled ahead in the final at-bat in game one, this time lifted to a 5-4 win by junior designated hitter David Tunstills walk-off homerun. The Melbourne, Fla. native belted a 1-1 pitch from Barry pitcher Bobby Hernandez over the leftfield wall capping a comeback from a four run deficit.

After Barry tagged Newberry starter Brandon Petty for four runs in the first five innings, the scrappy Indian lineup began to chip away at the Buccaneer lead.

In the bottom half of the fifth, sophomore Brandon Mand got things started when Barry starter Mike Davila plunked the rightfielder. Senior Ryan Easterby followed with a singled to right pushing Mand to third.

Shortstop Anthony Dillenger then plated Mand with a sacrifice fly to left.

The Indians next struck in the bottom of the sixth without the benefit of a hit. After catcher Brandon Gardner drew a walk, Nick Martin reached second on a throwing error and Gardner took third. Kris Garcia then flew out to left for another Newberry sacrifice fly, making the score 4-2.

The Indians scored a run in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings sending the game to extra innings. Tunstills tenth inning long ball marked the fifth time in the past six games that Newberry has come from behind to win.

Petty settled down, pitching a scoreless final four innings and striking out seven on the evening.

For Barry, Davila went 6.2 innings giving up three runs on four hits, only two were earned.

Buccaneer second baseman Gabriel Casanova went 3-for-4 with a homerun and two runs scored. Shortstop Nick Shaw was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

For Newberry, Mand was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and Gardner also went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

In game two, Indian starter Thomas Berryhill struggled early giving up five runs on six hits in just 0.2 innings pitched.

The scarlet and gray rallied back with a four run bottom half of the first highlighted by catcher Chris Rahals double down the left field line.

Current pitcher of the week in the South Atlantic Conference, Dale Bennett went 6.1 innings in relief allowing four hits and just one run.

The Indians match up with Barry again on Saturday with a 12 p.m. start.
