Indians open SAC schedule with win in last at bat
Friday, February 16, 2007

GREENVILLE, S.C. For the second time in as many games Newberry College baseball came from behind in the late innings to win, but this time the Indians knocked off conference foe Mars Hill College (3-9, 0-1 SAC), 5-4, in Greenville Municipal Stadium Friday night in the South Atlantic Conference opener for both teams.

After giving up a 3-2 lead in the top half of the ninth, a resilient Newberry (3-6, 1-0 SAC) squad rallied in the final at bat for second consecutive win.  Senior third baseman Ryan Easterby led off the ninth with a single to right field. Then head coach Bob Rikeman subbed in speedy junior Casey Faulkenberry as a pinch runner.

Mars Hill reliever Eric Stewart yielded a sacrifice bunt from Indian rightfielder Brandon Mand, moving Faulkenberry to second base. Then Rikeman went to his bench again, this time pulling this past Wednesdays starting pitcher, Matt Awtrey, out of the dugout to pinch hit.

The left-handed hitting Awtrey rifled a line drive just inside the rightfield line for an RBI double plating Faulkenberry.

With the game knotted at 4-4 and a man on second, Lions head coach Dan Taylor went to his bullpen for a second time, bringing out junior southpaw Tyler Greene.

Rikeman countered with a pinch runner for Awtrey, calling on reserve outfielder Nicholas Young. The Adel, Ga. native danced and dangled from second base eventually coaxing Greene into throwing a pick-off attempt away. The speedy Young took third easily.

After a two-strike sacrifice bunt attempt failed from lead-off man Brandon Gardner, leftfielder Nick Martin hit a sharp grounder to shortstop Brian Williams. Williams knocked the grounder down but threw a two-hopper to first resulting in Martin reaching safely and Young dashing home for an Indian win.

Lost in the frantic finish was the outstanding pitching duel of Newberry starter Brandon Petty and Mars Hill ace Nick Tracy. Petty, a 6-2 junior from Melbourne, Fla., threw 8.1 courageous innings. With 11 strikeouts, Petty fanned two more Lions than his entire season total coming into his third appearance. The Indians number one starter finished the game scattering eight hits and giving up four runs.

Tracy went 7.0 strong innings, allowing seven hits and three runs, just two were earned.

Three Newberry hitters collected two hits and four different players drove in runs. Juniors Brandon Mand and David Tunstill each had two hits and an RBI, as did Easterby.

For Mars Hill, third baseman David DeSilva went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

Newberry and Mars Hill meet again in Greensville Municipal Stadium for a twin bill on Saturday with the first pitch coming at 1 p.m.
