FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Newberry College baseball picked up it's first win of the 2007 campaign with a 4-2 victory over #27 Nova Southeastern in non-conference action in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Thursday evening.
A RBI single by second baseman Kris Garcia and a sacrifice fly by shortstop David Tunstill put Newberry up 2-1 in the fifth inning before Nova Southeastern would respond to tie the game in the seventh on a RBI single by pinch hitter Brayan Valencia.
Newberry plated the winning runs in the top of the ninth inning, capitalizing on two NSU errors to secure the win.
Newberry starting pitcher Brandon Petty pitched seven and one thirds innings, holding Nova Southeastern to four hits and two unearned runs while reliever Stephen Bryd picked up the win by pitching 1.2 innings of scoreless ball.
The Indians continue play in Florida with a 3 p.m. game vs. Valdosta State on Friday.
