KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Senior Zach Evans had three hits and delivered six RBI as 28th-ranked Catawba defeated Newberry 20-9 in baseball action at the South Atlantic Conference Pre-Season Clash on Sunday afternoon at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. The Catawba Indians improve to 2-1, while Newberry falls to 0-3.
Catawba jumped on Newberry with six runs in the opening inning. David Thomas drew a leadoff walk and Matt Kepley Greensboro, NC) reached on a field choice. Following an out, Ryan Query, Chad Baker and Evans each delivered RBI hits. Brett Hatleyhad a two-run double in the frame.
The Indians would get three runs in the fourth. Freshman Jose Rosa pinch hit for Brandon Gardner and reached first to lead of the inning by being hit by a pitch. Back-to-back singles by junior Casey Faulkenberry and sophomore Kris Garcia produced a bases loaded situation. Then junior David Tunstill reached on an error by the Catawba third baseman and Rosa and Faulkenberry came in to score. After an Anthony Dillenger ground out advanced the runners, Garcia and Tunstill, Nick Martin grounded out to short, plating Garcia for Newberry's third run.
Catawba would put the game out of reach in the seventh with another six-run inning. Evans capped the scoring with a three-run homer in the eighth.
Alex Fairweather earned the win for Catawba. He allowed five hits over five innings of work with four strikeouts. He surrendered six runs with only three earned. Jose Rosa and Scott Horvath each had two hits and a RBI for Newberry.
