NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College director of athletics Andy Carter and head baseball coach Robert Rikeman announced today the hiring of Chris Youngberg as assistant baseball coach.

Youngberg comes to Newberry from the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs where he served as an assistant coach. The Diamond Dawgs are part of the Florida Collegiate Summer League (FCSL). The FCSL is a summer wooden bat league that serves as a developmental organization for collegiate baseball players.

Youngberg has additional experience with collegiate ball players. In the summer of 2005, Youngberg was the head coach for the Nashville Catamounts where he won the Tennessee "Sand Lott" Collegiate Summer League championship.

While coaching summer league collegiate baseball, Youngberg coached the Colonial High School baseball team since 2001. Youngberg accumulated a 71-44 record in four years at Colonial High, including an 18-8 2005 season in which his team GPA was 3.1 and every player passed the FCAT.

In 2004, Youngberg was selected to serve at a national level as a scout and instructor for USA Baseball's 18 and under National Trials at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Florida. Youngberg has playing experience at the international level as a member of Greece's national baseball team from 2004-2005. With the Greek national team, Youngberg played in the 2004 European Championships, 2005 Olympic Qualifiers, and served as an alternate on the 2005 Olympic team in Athens, Greece.

A Division I pitcher at two programs, Youngberg brings a wealth of collegiate experience to the diamond for the Indians. From 1996-97, Youngberg took the mound for East Carolina University and from 1997-2000 hurled for the University of Central Florida. Youngberg was also a team co-captain from 1999-2000.
