Saturday, February 4, 2006

MT. OLIVE, N.C. Mt. Olive put two runs on the board in the final three innings of play to edge Newberry in baseball action Saturday afternoon in the second game of a doubleheader, 2-1. Each team amassed three hits and committed one error and both teams left four runners on base throughout the game.

Newberry (1-2) suffers their second straight loss while Mt. Olive (2-0) sweeps their opening day action. Nick Loden (0-1) is credited with the Newberry loss while Justin Staatz (1-0) picks up the win for the Trojans.

Loden pitched five innings, giving up two earned runs and walked four, striking out two in the effort.

Newberrys run came in the top of the second inning as Matt Webb reached on base off a Mt. Olive error while Anthony Dillenger scored with Ryan Easterby moving to third. However, Chris Rahal lined out to second base to prevent any more runs from coming in.

With the score tied at one in the bottom of the sixth, Pat Egleston came into pitch for the Indians with Loden being held responsible for Stephan Nordan on second, who reached on a double down the left field line. Egleston managed to put two outs on the board before Mt. Olives Erik Lovett singled to left center to score Nordan, giving the Trojans the 2-1 lead. The Indians went three up, three down in the final inning as Mt. Olive sealed the win.

Mt. Olive and Newberry face off in another doubleheader Sunday afternoon, with action getting underway at 1 p.m.
