Two-run 10th inning gives Newberry 3-2 opening day victory

SPARTANBURG, S.C. � Chris Rahal hit a two out, RBI triple to center field to score Matt Awtrey and then scored on a bad pickoff throw by USC Upstate�s catcher Michael Kohn to score two runs in the top of the 10th inning as Newberry (1-0) edged USC Upstate (0-1) in opening day baseball action Wednesday afternoon.

Most of the game was a pitching and defensive dual as Newberry had three chances to score late in the game before the teams went into extra innings. Matt Cote gets the win for Newberry as eight different Indians stepped on the mound.

Pupo hit a solo home run in the second inning.Carlos Pupo started off the second inning for the Indians with a deep shot beyond the center field wall with a solo home run traveling approximately 415 feet to give the Indians the 1-0 lead early on.

USC Upstate responded in the bottom of the second as Matt Goyea sent shot past the right field wall approximately 330 feet to tie the game at one run apiece.

Newberry had three chances later in the game to put some runs on the board. Matt Webb reached base in the top of the sixth  and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Chris Rahal. Webb moved to third after the Spartans pitcher sent a pitch above the catcher�s head. However, Nick Martin struck out and Brandon Manasa ground out to third to end the inning and the threat.

The Indians threatened again in the top of the eighth as Anthony Dillenger reached base on a bloop single to left field. Dillenger advanced to third on a two base error on Spartan pitcher Brad Blanks as Blanks tried to pick off Dillenger. Chris Rahal then reached base after being hit by a pitch and stole second without an attempt to be thrown out. With two outs and men on second and third, Tyler Manasa entered the ball game for Nick Martin and grounded out to short, getting thrown out by half a step to end the inning.

In the top of the ninth with one out, Newberry had runners on the corners with Pupo on first and Brandon Manasa stealing third. Ryan Easterby sent a fly ball to left field which was caught and then fired home as the Spartans caught B. Manasa attempting to tag up and score, ending the inning.

USC Upstate threatened in the bottom of the ninth with men on first and second and two outs before pitcher Matt Cote forced Andrew Runion to pop up to first to end the inning.

In the top of the 10th with Matt Awtrey on first, Chris Rahal smacked a low liner into center field that bounced and rolled past a diving Bret Hansen trying to make a catch, giving Rahal an RBI triple. Awtrey scored giving the Indians the 2-1 lead with two outs. Spartans pitcher Sam Hart put runners on the corner as Hart walked Tyler Manasa on a full count pitch. Rahal scored on a Spartan error as Upstate�s catcher, Michael Kohn, attempted to throw Rahal out at third but the ball rolled into left field on a bad throw, scoring Rahal as Tyler Manasa stole second. Brandon Manasa struck out to end the inning as Newberry held a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the 10th.

Kohn started off the bottom half of the 10th with a first pitch double down the first base line and then advanced to third on a sacrifice fly to right by Eric Guillen. Kohn scored on a full count sacrifice fly to center field by Buck Bates as the Spartans pulled within one run, 3-2. Jimmy Bertelson ended the game as  the Spartan�s John Caddell grounded out to second to end the game.

Matt Cote (1-0) gets the win for Newberry while Sam Hart (0-1) is credited with the loss. Newberry returns to action Saturday at Mount Olive with doubleheader action getting underway at Noon.
