NEWBERRY, S.C. - Despite flood conditions, the Red Team swept a double header to take the Newberry Baseball World Series Championship.  Will Folk led the Red team in victory in game one 6-5 and Pete Stuppiello pitched a solid 5 innings in the championship game with the Red Team taking an 8-3 victory.  Special kudos goes out to Coach Boeshko, Coach Goens and Coach Varitek for draining the pond at second base and getting the field ready for the series.  Due to the recent flood conditions, it was agreed upon to play a double header prior to the start of game one.

In game one the Red Team took off behind the solid pitching of Will Folk and the hot bat of Carlos Pupo.  Pupo drove in 3 runs with line drive shot over the center field wall in the fifth.  Pupo’s blast was his second home run in the series.  Anthony Orr, Matthew Webb and Matt Awtrey also had solid offensive performances for the Red.

The Black Team did not go down quietly in the final frame.  With Matt Cote on in relief for the Red, the Black team scrapped their way on based.  Down 6-2, Team Black rallied to score 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th.  When the final out was made controversy ensued.  Team Black had the score tied 5-5 while Team Red began to celebrate their 6-5 victory.  The series commissioner was called in to evaluate the situation and determined that Joe Cunetta, who was keeping the book failed to credit Anthony Orr with an RBI in the second inning therefore giving the Red Team a 6-5 victory.

Game two was all Red 8-3.  Carlos Pupo once again proved to be the difference driving in 4 runs while playing excellent defense at first base.  Ryan Easterby also drove in 2 runs while Matt Awtrey had a two run Home Run to cap off an explosive day at the plate for the Red.  Pete Stuppiello dominated the Black hitters for five innings and Jared Locke closed out the Black with 2 innings of relief.  Locke struck out the side in the 6th while striking out 2 in the 7th.

Team Red celebrated by dumping the Gatorade cooler on Coach Boeshko to celebrate their 3 games to 1 series victory.  Team Red will now enjoy the fruits of victory with Team Black serving them a steak dinner in front of their peers in the dining hall.
