Sunday, April 9, 2006

MARS HILL, N.C. The Lions baseball team split a South Atlantic Conference twin bill with Newberry College Saturday afternoon at Henderson Field on the Mars Hill College campus. The Lions had 12 runs on 17 hits in the opener to take a 12-3 win. The Newberry Indians rebounded to take a 7-2 victory in the nightcap.

MHC is now 27-21 overall and 10-8 in the SAC. Newberry falls to 9-36 on the season and 2-16 in the league. Sunday's victory set a new school record for wins in a single season for the Lions since they have been competing at the NCAA Division II level.

Game 1: MHC 12, Newberry 3
The Lions got on the board in the third inning when Matt Carter (Sunrise, Fla.) doubled off the right field fence to score James Dean (Lake Butler, Fla.) and David DeSilva (Charlotte, N.C.). Newberry trimmed the Lions lead to 2-1 in the fourth inning after Joel Keefe (Andover, Mass.) singled up the middle to score Brandon Manasa (Miami, Fla.).

Kris Garcia (Miami, Fla.) tied the game at 2-all in the seventh inning after he hit a home run to center field. In the bottom half of the seventh inning, Mars Hill scored four runs on three hits. John Quail (Boonsboro, Md.) led the inning off with a double and then Jason Yelton (Burnsville, N.C.) was walked. Dean then singled through the right side to drive in Quail and Yelton. Dean advanced from first to third on a wild pitch and one batter later, crossed the plate on another wild pitch. Matt Russell (Chapel Hill, N.C.) followed with a double to score DeSilva, who reached earlier on a base on balls.

Newberry cut the lead to 6-3 in the eighth inning when Garcia hit a ball over the first basemans head to drive in Brandon Manasa. The Lions broke the game open in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring six runs on four hits and one Newberry error to take a 12-3 advantage. The inning was highlighted by a two-RBI single from Dean.

Dean led MHC, going three-for-four with four RBI and three runs scored in game one. Carter had two hits and three RBI. Russell and DeSilva recorded three hits each in the win. Nick Tracy (Herndon, Va.) obtained the win, throwing seven innings while scattering six hits and allowing two runs. Tracy improves to 6-3 overall on the season. Cody Branton (Burnsville, N.C.) threw the final two innings to pick up his first save on the year.

Manasa and Garcia had two hits each to lead Newberry at the plate. Garcia added a pair of RBI. The Indians turned four double plays in the contest. Gary Hersey (Key West, Fla.) took the loss for Newberry on the mound, dropping to 0-2 overall on the season.

Game 2: Newberry 7, MHC 2
Newberry left-hander Pete Stuppiello (Gilbert, S.C.) tossed a complete game five-hitter and his Indian teammates compiled seven runs on 11 hits to split the SAC doubleheader. Stuppiello gave up two runs (only one earned) on five hits, striking out two and walking two to improve to 2-5 overall on the season.

The Indians built a 3-0 lead with one run in the top of the second inning and two scores in the fourth frame. In the Newberry second, Anthony Orr (Lantana, Fla.) reached on an error. One out later, Orr stole second base. He scored on an RBI single by Matt Awtrey (Columbia, S.C.).

Newberry pushed its margin to 3-0 with two runs in the fourth. Orr started the inning by drawing a walk from Lion starter Nathan Fritz (Kingsport, Tenn.). Orr scored later in the inning on a double play grounder. An RBI bunt single by Casey Faulkenberry (Camden, S.C.) scored Levi Salters (Vincennes, Ind.), who followed Orrs walk with a single.

Mars Hill scored two in the bottom of the fifth to cut the margin to 3-2 Newberry. Chris Lambert (Brevard, N.C.) led off the inning with a double. He scored on an RBI single by Yelton. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt, Yelton scored on a Newberry fielding error.

The visitors concluded the scoring with four runs on four hits in the top of the sixth inning. The big hit for the Indians was a bases-clearing, three-RBI double by Brandon Manasa.

Four Indians had two hits each in the nightcap. Brandon Manasa led the way with a 2-for-4 performance. He had the insurance double, a triple and three RBI. Awtrey, Faulkenberry and Anthony Dillenger (Gaffney, S.C.) also had two hits each for the victors. Dillenger had two doubles, while Awtrey had one two-bagger.

Wassum gave MHC a 4-0 lead in the third inning when he hit a grand slam homerun over the center field fence. Newberry fought back scoring two runs in the fourth inning after Garcia scored on a fielder's choice, then Levi Salters singled to center to plate Anthony Dillenger (Gaffney, S.C.).

Salters led Newberry going 3-for-5 with two RBI. Dillenger was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI. Jared Locke (Inman, S.C.) took the loss (1-5) on the mound for the Indians.
