Baseball wins at Coker, 12-11
Tuesday, April 4, 2006

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - Newberry scored five unanswered runs from the fourth inning to the seventh to build a seven-run lead, and it would need every one of those runs to withstand a six-run Coker College rally over the final two innings to win, 12-11, at Tom J. New Field Tuesday afternoon.

The 12-6 Indian lead looked safe entering the top of the ninth, as Newberry (8-33-1) was the home team and was three outs away from the win.  Junior pitcher Matt Cote (Orleans, Ind.) entered the game for Newberry and allowed seven of the eight batters he faced to reach base, five on hits.  Five Cobra runs scored, and with only one out, Coker (14-24-1) had runners on first and second.

Will Folk (Charleston, S.C.) took the mound to face designated hitter Willie LoVerde (Staten Island, N.Y.).  LoVerde swung on the 1-0 pitch, smashing what would have been an extra-bases hit down the third base line had it not been for a diving snag from Newberry third baseman Matthew Webb (Cheraw, S.C.).  Webb regained his feet and fired to second for the double play to preserve the win.

Coker took an early 2-1 lead after the first, but Newberry would not stay down for long, scoring eight runs over the next three innings to Cokers three runs. Joel Keefe (Andover, Mass.) pushed a run across in the first, and Brandon Manasa (Miami, Fla.) plated two on a triple in the second.

Keefe, Webb, Casey Faulkenberry (Camden, S.C.), and Brandon Gardner (Gaffney, S.C.) had hits in the four-run third.  Webb, Faulkenberry, Tyler Manasa (Miami, Fla.), and Gardner earned a RBI apiece.

Carlos Pupo came just shy of an inside-the-park homerun in the fourth, as he legged out a triple and then came home as the outfield relay was mishandled.  Anthony Dillenger (Gaffney, S.C.) scored on the Pupo shot to the right field fence.

Faulkenberry, Brandon Manasa, and Dillenger batted in a run each in the sixth and seventh innings for a 12-5 lead.

Coker starter Kyle Strickland (1-1) took the loss, throwing three innings and allowing seven runs on nine hits.

Jared Locke (Inman, S.C.) earned his first win of the season, going six innings for the Indians, allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out three. Folk earned the first save of the year for Newberry.

For the Cobras, Ben Davidson was 4-for-5 with a double and six RBIs, while Brian Nally was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Nic Fletcher was also 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Newberry was led by Brandon Manasa, who was 2-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs, while Webb and Tyler Manasa were each 3-for-4 with an RBI. Joel Keefe was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Coker returns to the field on Wednesday, as they travel to Benedict College at 6:00 p.m. Newberry continues their road tour as they will face USC Aiken on Thursday.
